Review: While Whyborne and Griffin are off dealing with the Fideles cult in Kansas, trouble has come to Widdershins. Because, of course it has. What else would you expect from a horrible murder town? However, just because our regular heroes are away that doesn’t mean all is lost. The town is in good hands. Persephone, Miss Parkhurst, Heliabel, Mr. Quinn, and the rest of the librarians are on watch—and you’d be surprised what a bunch of dictionary-wielding librarians, some ketoi, and a simple secretary can do!
If you asked Maggie Parkhurst about her redeeming qualities, you would probably get a blush and some form of “I’m just a secretary” as a response. But, Whyborne’s ketoi sister, Persephone, knows there’s much more to Maggie than that. Maggie can certainly be thick about certain things (hilariously so)—things that seem as plain as the nose on her face to others—but she’s actually quite sharp and much more capable than she gives herself credit for. It is so fun to see her in action in Undertow. Breaking and entering, carrying knives, throwing harpoons, skulking around after dark…AND, declaring herself, at last, to Persephone. Jordan L. Hawk has delivered what so many have been waiting for with this romance. These two are adorably awkward, sweet, and yes, sexy together. I loved what Hawk did with this courtship. So much fun.
Of course, it’s not all rainbows and ketoi kisses, though. This is a novella set in the Whyborne and Griffin universe after all, which means Hawk also delivers the action. The cultists are on the loose again, and not just in Fallow. Some remain in Widdershins, waiting to carry out a troubling plan there. As usual, it’s difficult to know who to trust, and Maggie gets caught in the middle between a dear family/childhood friend, and the woman she has grown to care deeply for.
This was a fantastic way to stay connected to this much-loved universe and all its crazy goings on, and to see how everyone fairs while the usual gang are out of the picture. Once again, we see that Widdershins knows its own, and Miss Parkhurst shows us she’s up to whatever gets thrown at her. What a treat this novella was. These ninety pages pack a punch.
