At a Glance: A decent little mystery, with sort of an eerie quality. I would classify it as entertaining, if a bit farfetched.

Devin’s life is disrupted when the handsome Miles suspects him of being a serial arsonist. But he wasn’t the only survivor. A boy named Sebastian who had been adopted by Devon’s family also survived the blaze.
Then an attempt is made on Devin’s life. Can Miles keep Devin safe from an arsonist who will stop at nothing to silence him? Or will the attraction between them jeopardize the investigation?
Review: The prologue! OMG, let me tell you it had me like “whoa”, grabbing my attention immediately. It was sort of a risky move, but ultimately set the tone for the rest of the story, creating a sort of eerie experience with all the different perspectives the reader gets. Told in third person POV from multiple characters, including the firebug/murderer, it was quite the experience to have a front row insight into the mind of such a disturbed individual.
Miles is a Fire Investigator, not to be confused with a firefighter, and is called in with his partner, Blake, to investigate a fire that had multiple casualties. Clues are sparse and after months, it looks to be going nowhere—until another fire with an almost identical set of circumstances sets off Miles’ radar. With a little research and a bit of gut instinct, he stumbles onto the break in the case; an arson 20 years prior could hold the key to finding the criminal, and brings Miles to Devin’s doorstep.
Though there was a romance brewing between Miles and Devin, it really took a back seat to finding the firebug and stopping him before more lives were lost. Miles and Devin are obviously attracted to one another, and the reader gets a little snapshot that after everything is resolved they end up together, but from meeting each other to the final climactic scene, only a few days pass, and most of it is filled with tracking down baddy, not acting on the obvious attraction they feel.
At times it all was a bit farfetched and had me scratching my head (I even had to google at least one item to see if what I was reading was accurate. I’m still not positive it was, as I found little to support the claim), and I had to suspend disbelief on multiple occasions. I won’t go into details, because that would be a spoiler. Suffice to say I’m still not convinced on some of the plot.
Even with being on the fence about some of the twists of the plot, I enjoyed the writing style and appreciated how the author was able to clearly separate out the POV I was reading, as trying to figure out whose perspective I’m reading from is one of my biggest pet peeves when there are multiple voices.
If you enjoy a good little mystery, are willing to suspend a little disbelief, and appreciate something that has a little darker perspective, this story may just be up your ally.
