Review: At the time I selected this book for review, I wasn’t aware that is was part of a series. There are three books prior to this one: Breathless, Murder at Green Lantern, and Invisible Curtain, which all lead up to Legacy of Hephaestus.
The story starts out with the robbery of the Lava Diamond from the Coster Diamond factory in Amsterdam. Then, it takes us to Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport where Corey Shaw and his family—mother, Arlene, and six siblings, and three in-laws—have flown after an explosion on their cruise ship. And there’s family drama going on when Arlene informs her brood that she’s chosen not to return home, and will stay with Don, the security chief, and set sail on whatever ship he is assigned to.
Corey is a unique character. He is a Psionic Officer for the United States, and has what’s called psionic powers—telekinesis and clairvoyance—which makes this story quite interesting. I really like the fact that Corey doesn’t overuse his powers; that way the storyline doesn’t become comical. There are certain things he can’t do, or his powers will diminish quickly.
Besides Corey’s thoughts about various missions, he also has many sexual escapades that he looks back on. There’s a former boyfriend, Nathan, and it seems Corey cheated on him—twice. Nathan has moved on, but Corey’s siblings are trying to get him and Nathan back together.
Corey gets called in on the Lava Diamond robbery, but he doesn’t realize how deep he’s in until people start getting murdered and a professor comes up missing.
Alex Morgan is a superb storyteller and writer. Lots of danger, adventure, action, murder, travel all over the globe, and never a dull moment are highlights in this book. Needless to say, as you get tidbits about Corey’s previous dilemmas, the drama with family, his ex and his sexual escapades, it’s very tempting to want to read this whole series.
