Review: Pete’s not really a big wilderness/hiking guy, but he finds nature fascinating and in lingering too long to appreciate the beauty of it, he gets lost. Things aren’t so beautiful once night fall comes and he faces the cold, a cougar, and a storm with plenty of thunder, lightning and rain. Trying to get out of the harsh elements, he wanders on to a small shed, and holes up there for the night.
Tobias Montford is alpha of the newly established Greenview Pack. The pack is small and consists of his mother and sister, and a new addition who could arrive any day. Tobias and the pack suffered at the hands of a cruel alpha, but made progress building their own small community in Yellowstone. Sometimes Tobias struggles with making decisions, and seeks help from Mother goddess.
When Greg, one of his pack members, makes Tobias aware of a human in their shed, they investigate. Tobias knows right away what Pete is—besides being human—and he knows that he needs to protect his pack, regardless of what Pete is to him. Pete’s a city boy and a writer, and Tobias knows the wilderness isn’t where he needs to be. As Tobias and the other pack members make Pete feel at home, he struggles through his feelings. Pete finds himself and Tobias getting emotionally involved, and it gets a little rocky at times, but Pete stands up to Tobias. With all the adjusting Pete and Tobias have to do, they also have to deal with Tobias’s half-brother, Zev. Zev not only brings danger to Tobias and Pete, but he threatens the serenity of the Greenview Pack.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a shifter book, but this was a good, solid story. I liked Pete’s oddness and Tobias’s not-so-hard-core alpha. Combined, it gave these characters a nice blend of chemistry. This is the third book in the Yellowstone Wolves series, and I didn’t feel lost even though I hadn’t read the previous books, Challenge the Darkness and Darkness Threatening. This book did pique my interest in a few of the characters from the previous stories. There are characters aplenty, and there’s a definite hint that there will be another installment in the series. Shifter fans will really enjoy Darkness Rising.
