Guest Post: Hacked Up by Ethan Stone

We’re so pleased to have author Ethan Stone joining us today to talk about murder and mystery and his newest release, Hacked Up.

I’m fascinated with death and murder.

Taken on its own that statement could be misconstrued. But I don’t think I’m alone in my fascination, at least I hope not. If I was there wouldn’t be people still trying to figure out who Jack the Ripper was or who killed Jon Benet or if OJ actually did do it. Some of it is an extreme form of rubbernecking like people do at accidents, but it’s also normal to want answers.

I don’t know about other people, but I’m frustrated by things like the incidents mentioned above. I despise not knowing. Well, not so much about OJ because I absolutely think he did do it. But the Jon Benet Ramsey murder is one of those cases that I wish I had answers to. So much of that case was mishandled that there was definitely something shady going on.

Serial killers are another fascination of mine. Sometimes I’ll just read article after article on certain ones or a variety of them. My boyfriend always looks at me weird when I tell him this. I assure him that it’s not to figure out how to dispose of his body if he pisses me off (I already know how, but he doesn’t need to know that).

I’d love to know who the Zodiac Killer is and what happened to him. And BTK. Wow, that guy disappeared for years then resurfaced. And how was he caught? A stupid, stupid mistake. He sent information to the press via a computer disk not knowing the disk had metadata that would lead the cops right to him.

It was this need, partially anyway, that led me to writing thrillers. In my book there are always answers and solutions. I’m the creator of the world so I write the murders and the murderers. I make sure the cops get the answers they need to stop the killers.

There’s a real life serial killer who was never caught that I swear I am one day going to write a book based on. He was known as the Black Doodler (Horrible name, right?) and killed gay men in San Francisco in the seventies. He was never arrested even though a couple victims survived and could identify him. They were just afraid to come forward as gay and have their lives exposed.

I despise not having the answers to that case, so one day I will write my own. It won’t be as satisfying as knowing the actual truth, but it’s as close as I’ll ever get.
