Blurb: Callum Ross has a tough decision to make. After years of working for the covert ops agency in the UK and owning his own security firm in the US, he’s forced to choose between the business he loves, and the new fragile relationship with his partner, Josh Cooper.
A bottle of whiskey and almost being killed by a motorbike helps Cal make the decision, and he moves to the UK with plans to set up his own security consultancy. Then the head of the covert ops agency where Josh now works asks Cal for help. Agency operatives and their families are being injured or killed, including Cal’s friends.
Cal is asked to investigate with Josh’s assistance. As the number of victims increase, they’re aware either of them could be the next target for the killer. Josh wants Cal to back away from the investigation in case he gets hurt, but Cal refuses, putting a strain on their relationship.
Then they discover the motorbike incident wasn’t an accident. Who tried to kill him, and why?

Review: I finished this book last night and… but, but, but, but, but…BUT! Now, book one was not a cliffhanger, and it really threw me that this one ends with things unresolved. This book is tagged as a sequel to Morning My Angel, but I guess somewhere along the way it became a series or a trilogy?! Oh. Okay. Really, I need to quit whining because I loved this book like I loved the first book, and I look forward to the obvious next book. I just REALLY need Sue Brown to publish it with a quicker window between stories this time! Haha!

Brown’s writing has a certain quirky sense of humor and her characters are generally flawed but inherently intriguing. Her foray into the world of espionage and intrigue is spot-on and a pleasure to read, just as her romances are. It does seem sometimes that Brown gets lost in the detective storyline and then throws a bone to us romantics who want to see Josh and Cal succeed as a couple. It also smacks of James Bond a time or two, but since I happen to love James Bond, I found the references amusing and they made me smile.

“She looked up as he walked in. At least she didn’t do the power bullshit by pretending to ignore him. ‘Mr. Ross. I’ve been expecting you.’ All she needed was the white cat.”

Morning My Angel left Josh and Cal together as a couple, but separated by continents. I appreciated the flashback this book begins with, as it goes back and reestablishes our MCs and gives us insight into why these men made the decisions they made. You do not have to have read the first novel before reading this one, but I would recommend it as there are lots of references, jokes, innuendos that appear throughout the story, which are carryovers from book one. So, you don’t have to read book one but it would definitely enhance your enjoyment of this story when those little cookies are dropped and you can recognize them. Plus, this mystery all began in book one.

Josh now works for “the agency”. It is a private undercover consulting firm that does security and other odd jobs the government would rather not have its name attached to. This is the same firm that recruited Cal out of college, and that almost got him killed on assignment while working in Columbia—a firm started by Cal’s uncle and one which he was finally able to break free from. So, why does Josh work for them now? Well, that’s book one in the series. Goodnight My Angel begins with Josh and Cal trying to make their relationship work, and realizing that big changes will have to be made in their lives if they are going to move forward together. Then, people associated with the agency start dying. Bodies start to add up and we get hints that there is a higher power, a mastermind behind all the killings, but just who that is remains a mystery until almost the last page. Friends are suspect, colleagues are suspect, and even family members are questioned. And people keep dying. What ties these victims together? What is the purpose behind the killings, what does the puppetmaster hope to accomplish, and, more important, for how long has this been going on and nobody saw the pattern? Slowly this puzzle starts to unravel, and the answer has been years in the making.

Obviously, when you do the things the agency does, you make a lot of enemies and affect a lot of people’s lives. Cal and Josh’s struggle to grow closer together is made difficult when they are constantly being pulled into agency business, being shot at, blown up, or even run over can take the place of your personal life – especially when it is your job to discover who is behind it all. The romantic in me appreciated the warmth between our main characters, the way Josh constantly took care of Cal, and the fierceness with which Cal loves Josh. Every time they used the pet names Charlie and My Angel when speaking to each other, my heart warmed to these characters all over again. We needed these moments of closeness to happen between these two men, these snippets of alone time on the page, because both of these men are alpha independent individuals. I almost wished there was a moment of computer dialogue reminiscent of book one, but that’s my nostalgia talking. The groundwork of their relationship is established in book one with the Charlie’s Angels references, and it was endearing to have them continue on into this storyline.

A HEA is hinted at in this installment with declarations of love and talk of little black boxes. Cal tells Josh often that he will ask, and Josh retorts with he will say yes. But agency business is still coming first for them, and I really hope book three is a love story between these two men. I need some good, solid page time of just Josh and Cal, without all the extraneous outside influences. Yes, there are still questions hanging out there from this convoluted but intriguing storyline, which will have to be wrapped up in the next book, but I am looking forward to seeing just what Sue Brown will cook up for these two next, and the surprises she obviously has in store for us as readers.

I highly recommend book one and book two in this series, and yeah, I am really looking forward to book three.
