A Balls to the Wall Romance
Renowned artist Rodney Mansfield stands five foot six, has pink hair, six earrings, a black belt in karate—and a desperate yearning for firefighter Hunter Fallon. But Rod, the Runtback of Notre Dame, knows he’ll never land the beautiful “straight gay” guy, so Rod musters his altruism and helps his more masculine friend Jerry attract Hunter. As if a broken heart wasn’t enough, Rod saves Hunter from a firehouse homophobe—humiliating Hunter in front of his dad!
Hunter lives a dream life—his father’s dream. While he’d like to teach literature in college, read poetry in the sun, and find a strong guy to top him, he fights fires for his dad. Hunter hates flamboyant guys like Rodney. So why can’t he resist him? Maybe it’s time to admit this is one flame he has no desire to put out.

Review: Who doesn’t love a Tara Lain book? Fire Balls has a Cyrano de Bergerac feel to it. The main protagonist, Rodney, doubts that his small frame containing a grandly flamboyant personality could possibly interest the hunky firefighter, Hunter. When Rodney’s best friend Jerry lusts after Hunter and asks for Rodney’s help, Rodney tears his own heart out of his chest and helps bring the two together. What follows is a tale of two meant-to-be-together people finding each other.
There were several aspects to the book which helped to move the plot along, which also deepened the world we enter. Rodney is a talented artist right at the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame. Learning about the relationships, the politics, and the experiences of a young, talented artist was refreshing and new for me.
There were also several heavier subplots—namely, opening up to love and accepting who you are. Hunter also had some misconceptions about how to keep his father’s love, something he had to work out during the book. All of these mixed together to create a fast-paced and heart-worming story of love.
This is the type of book I would choose to read over a weekend. Something that I could pick up, put down, and pick up again, doing other things in between, and feeling like I’d had a fun weekend AND read a good book too.
