I would like to say a huge thank you to The Novel Approach for hosting me today and letting me share with you a bit about myself and my new release Submissive Secrets.
Hello everyone! I’m Zane Menzy and I’m an indie author who lives down under on the west coast of New Zealand—the wet side. My adventure with writing began years ago when I would spill my day’s events and emotions into a secret diary I kept hidden in a shoe box beneath my bed. I filled the pages with scribbled romantic longings over my high school crush; a boy in my class who just happened to be the hottest goth guy ever! I have since wiped the drool from my face and sharpened my talents (I hope) and moved on to residing happily within the community of gay romance. I love creating authentic characters. The type of people who are not perfect and have a tendency to make bad decisions… especially when faced with temptation. Something I know I struggle with be it ice cream or a sexy guy.
Growing up in an isolated part of an isolated country, I—like other young gay guys in my predicament—relied heavily on the internet to search for fun and find some sort of connection. It helped kill boredom, sometimes led to great friendships and yeah… I made some messy mistakes along the way. The positive to these sites, though, is how they can be a great way of meeting new people and sharing your existence. Something we all crave. However, there is a darker side to this technology with its buffet of sex, dating and porn. If you are not careful it can breed unrealistic expectations and harm the way we treat others and ourselves. It is this theme and the connections between lovers that I have tried exploring in my Crashing Hearts series. Yep, I tried bridging the wonderful fun of writing titillating sex scenes with a moral to the story.
In Submissive Secrets (which can be read as a stand-alone) the MC Keegan is a young guy with a secret crush on his best friend Liam; a very handsome and extremely competitive lad. They have both grown up enjoying the pleasure of having endless porn sites at their fingertips. This easy access to recorded sex has shaped their desires and expectations of what intimacy is about. After Keegan loses his virginity in dubious circumstances to his father’s best mate, he begins to view sex as a game that he must always be winning. The sense of control he craves leads him to think more with his little brain than with his heart and he starts to treat potential partners like objects rather than people.
As the journey unfolds there is plenty of humour (my attempt at it anyway) and heart-soaked drama. Garth from book one also makes an appearance. He is an adorable cheeky sod who really does leave a memorable impression—I wish I dated him *sigh*
Overall, I hope readers come away from Submissive Secrets with a connection to the characters and a real feel for New Zealand while having a few tugs (on the heart strings), laughs, and warm fuzzy moments.

“Only fifty bucks,” Liam sighed.

“And you want me to help?”
“If you think you can handle it,” Liam said cautiously. “You can say no and I’ll understand but anything we make I’d go halves with you, bro. Straight down the middle.”
Keegan felt his throat constrict. “Why me?”
“You’re my best mate, aren’t you? Who else would I ask. And you’re a good-looking guy,” Liam said matter-of-factly.
“You think?”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Yes, Keegan. You’re attractive. There… I said it.” He leant across and ran a hand through Keegan’s hair. “With ya cute little blond curls and those sweet, pretty brown eyes,” he said in a girly voice. “Not to mention your sexy tan.” Liam dropped his hand to Keegan’s forearm, stroking seductively with his fingers. “Your milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.”
Keegan laughed, flicking Liam’s hand away. “Thank you.” Liam’s compliment felt so fucking good, he almost thought he could fly home.
“So you’ll help me? Go a little bit gay for pay?” Liam narrowed his eyes, smiling.
Keegan rubbed his hands down the legs of his pants. He would love to do stuff with Liam even if it was pretend. He just hoped his true desires didn’t come out and expose a very real attraction. He took a deep breath and released a response to this wet dream come true, “Yeah, why not.”
