Blurb: Dakota Landry just got out of prison after 12 years. If anyone can understand how that feels, it’s his new friend, Sage, who is determined to help him get used to life on the outside – and believes Dakota didn’t commit the crime he was in for.
Jayden Wilson is a former prosecutor who agrees to look into the case at the request of Sage’s lover, Adam. He sets out to prove Dakota is just another “innocent” ex-con, but once they meet, Jayden is more and more convinced Dakota just didn’t do what everyone thinks he did.
Trouble follows Dakota, and nothing is easy as he struggles to figure out how to live, now that he has choices. And Jayden isn’t sure how Dakota, or any lover for that matter, fits into his life. Their path from friendship to romance is a slow one, but Dakota begins to believe he deserves a chance at life, and Jayden falls a little more for Dakota every day. Now they just need to tell each other how they feel.
Review: Dakota Landry has been released from prison after twelve years. Disowned by his family after being convicted of a crime he has always maintained he is innocent of, his only friend, Sage, comes to pick him up and help him start a new life.
Jayden Wilson is a former prosecutor and a friend of Sage’s. Jayden is also connected to characters from the first two books in this series. Jayden meets Dakota and hears bits of his story, and he realizes that Dakota may just be telling the truth about his past. But, disasters both minor and major, seem to follow Dakota. Feelings grow between Dakota and Jayden. Does Dakota’s guilt or innocence really matter? If he is innocent how did he get convicted? Will Jayden upper class family accept his choices? The story Tortuga shares with us gives us all the answers, and some surprises along the way as well.
Lou Lambert is a great voice for western tales—the voice here really does matter. The inflections are nice and the regional accent delivered well. Those familiar with Texas will find one good laugh in the narration, though. The Texas grocery chain H.E.B. is not read as letters but as the word HEB. If you can overlook that, this narration is really quite good.
All the characters get proper treatment, and it is nice to get updates on old friends from the previous books. This is a standalone story, and you need not have read the previous books to enjoy the action in this one. If you get the chance, pick them up. I can recommend this book to anyone who likes western romances, and to those who like a little mystery with their hot men. Both the author and narrator seem well matched here. Buy the narration and enjoy the action.
