Blurb: Imperfect harmony can still be beautiful….
John Fletcher, a former musician, is stuck in limbo after losing his long-term partner two years ago. He’s shut himself off from everything that reminds him of what he’s lost. When his neighbor persuades him to join the local community choir, John rediscovers his love of music and finds a reason to start living again.
Rhys Callington, the talented and charismatic choir leader, captures John’s attention from the first moment they meet. He appears to be the polar opposite of John: young, vibrant, and full of life. But Rhys has darkness in his own past that is holding him back from following his dreams.
Despite the 19-year age gap, the two men grow close and a fragile relationship blossoms. Ghosts of the past and insecurities about the future threaten their newfound happiness. If they’re going to harmonize in life and love as they do in their music, they’ll need to start following the same score.
Review: Imperfect Harmony is a very pleasurable listen. What could have been a sad and depressing tale was instead a sweet story of two men finding each other after loss.
John lost his longtime partner after many years together. Rhys’s boyfriend died in a freak accident, and, despite being so young, Rhys has had a hard time moving on. The two men meet when John’s friend drags him to a choir practice led by Rhys.
The two men have a slow, sweet romance where they learn that they share a love of music as well as the knowledge of what it’s like to lose someone you love. While the pacing is realistic, it did feel a little too slow and kind of dragged. However, once they got together things were a ton more interesting.
John and Rhys are realistic and intriguing men, and I really enjoyed their romance. The conflict could’ve been a bit stronger, because I never felt the issue was insurmountable. The ending was extremely satisfactory.
Another enjoyable book by Northcote and a great narration by Steadman, who perfectly voiced the characters.
