Review: Okay I am going to spill it here and say three things you should know before reading this review of Surrendered to the Sea: one, the story was super sweet and fantasy from beginning to end. Two, both characters had heaps of unresolved depression that oddly worked in their favor to keep them in a love bubble, for a time, until reality finally broke through and made them both come to terms with it, and three, this is a paranormal story; it is not reality; it was not meant to be reality; and applying standard everyday relationship norms to it is not going to work. In other words, leave your disbelief firmly at the door before you enter in.

I liked this novel. Yes, it was unbelievable and drenched in crazy situations that could never work in real life, but I really liked Lir and Devon. Both of these beings needed saving, in their own ways, and the unique way in which the author chose to bring that about caught and held my interest. I liked the fact that Lir had a bit of a dark past that slowly got revealed as the island he was building evolved. I was happy to watch Devon wake up from the gray fog of depression that had marked most of his adult life, and come to terms with the fact that no one but himself could save him in the end—not even a sea god. The mpreg trope, not normally a favorite of mine, worked here, and honestly, the mix of sea god and werewolf created the strangest yet oddly cutest shifter baby I’ve seen in a long time.

When Lir answers Devon’s despairing call to the sea to take him—to keep him—this naive sea god takes his job seriously. Having been put on warning by his dad, Father North, that he was about to lose his territory and his sea god status, he begins the rescue process with a single-minded approach to prove he can be compassionate and caring to a land dweller. As he builds an island for his human werewolf, little does he understand that both he and Devon will change not only the landscape of the sea but their whole way of existing. But the island is not utopia, and a land dweller needs more than a god to be happy. As one secret builds upon another, Lir realizes he has not really changed at all—that he is doomed to repeat the past unless he does something drastic.

Surrendered to the Sea by Dessa Lux is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. There is so much of this story that many will just roll their eyes at and say is just too sweet, too easy a fix, and too over the top even for a paranormal novel. However, for me, there was something about this book that drew me in. The gentle nature of Devon, who is an omega wolf—one who yearns to be mated and produce offspring and who has been kept in a bubble by his protective parents, to the point where he moves through life depressed and rudderless—was a bit heartbreaking to read. He grows up in this story, and that element of the novel was very believable to me. Lir was a god, and by virtue of that, anything he did was acceptable, although some might feel the limits were pushed to the edge at times. The sheer amount of technology available to Lir in the middle of the ocean, via his brothers, would be a good example. Yet, again, I could buy it and let my disbelief go because I genuinely liked the character the author developed.

Surrendered to the Sea is a fantastical tale of love and romance within the supernatural world. While it may stretch the imagination, it still has a solid love story to tell, one you may just enjoy. I know I did.
