Review: Before reading this book, I went back and read all of the other book in the series, and I absolutely loved it. I was hooked, and read through them in just a few short days. What I loved about this book was how it tied the other books together, and the previous characters make reappearances in some way.
This book is pretty different from the others in that the Alpha realizes very young who his mate is. The book progresses quickly at first, as Yoram meets his mate in childhood. His mate is already an adult, which might sound strange, but there’s nothing inappropriate! I promise. The book is a slow burn, partially due to the initial age difference.
When Salvatore discovers he’s sick and going to die, he becomes desperate for a cure. He gets it, but the price is his humanity. Of course, this makes things much easier for Yoram. At least on the age front, because now Salvatore will continue to live until Yoram is old enough for a mate.
Except, Salvatore doesn’t want that.
To be honest, I originally didn’t care for Sal that much. At the start of the book, he’s a complete jerk and I felt so badly for Yoram. He tried so hard to be the perfect mate, and Sal threw it in his face. My heart broke for him as he waited and tried to hold together his pack while he was at risk of losing himself. In the end, Sal did turn it around for me, and I did like him better, but I feel the ending was rushed. I wanted to see more of the pack reacting to Sal. What little moments shined where their acceptance came through? What about those who rejected or feared Sal? I wanted to see that, and I wish the author had expanded on this section more before closing out the book.
In the end, the book and the series is a fun read. I enjoyed each of them, and if a fifth book were released, I would happily read it. Given that the characters do appear in each other’s books, and sometimes are quite heavily involved, I would recommend reading the entire series in order.
