At a Glance: I fear I may be in the minority with this review, but there were some things about this story that just didn’t gel for me. I did enjoy these two characters, however, and I think that those readers searching for a light and sexy read will find Satin fits the ticket.

Review: Satin, aka Ross Dauntry, is a female impersonator who uses his alternate persona to pay the bills while pursuing a career in ballet. With a gorgeous voice and an even lovelier body, Ross wears his signature red satin gown and wows men and woman alike in a nightclub downtown. Unfortunately, his boss is also under investigation for various crimes, and that is what brings detectives Joel Hunter and his partner, Trish, to the club as part of the sting operation. But once the case is closed, Joel finds himself returning to get one more glimpse of the lovely Satin, and little does he suspect that there is more to her than meets the eye.

Joel has never really had a successful long-term relationship; either his dates have found him boring and attempted to mold him into something he is not, or the spark has always been missing, romantically. Of course, Joel has always dated women…but that is all about to change. Can a man who has denied his attraction to men for so long really open up to one who performs as a woman?

I fear I may be in the minority with this review, but there were some things about this story that just didn’t gel for me. It really began the moment the switch seemed to flip from off to on for Joel, and he accepted–in fact pursued Ross, sexually–with such incredible ease. For a guy who had never been with another man before, I felt their initial encounters were rather effortless, with Joel experimenting physically without any hesitation. I just felt the transition from questioning how in the heck he could be attracted to a man, to performing oral sex which was swiftly followed by full on anal, was just a tad bit too uncomplicated and sudden. To be fair, Joel did have genuine moments of shock over his seemingly effortless ability to be physically uninhibited with Ross, and that gave his character some depth and believability, but I still felt their relationship moved too swiftly for a man who had never been intimate with another man.

I did enjoy these two characters, however. I felt their time spent apart to be genuine, especially Ross, who really questioned if Joel was interested in him as the man he was or in Satin, his female persona. I felt for Ross as he tried his best not to fall for Joel, and tried to guard his emotions all the while failing miserably to do so. There were also realistic moments when Joel questioned exactly what he was doing and how he truly felt about Ross, leading him to question his own self-view and sexuality.

I think that those readers searching for a light and sexy read will find Satin fits the ticket. While I struggled with some of the aspects of the novel, it was still a well-written story with genuinely sweet and romantic characters, and was a sexy story that entertained.
