Blurb: It’s Valentine’s weekend. For Skylar Everclear, it’s a holiday he wishes he could forget. Now, mysterious roses keep popping up on his doorstep, he has no idea what is going on, and he’s a little disturbed by this secret admirer of his. Trying to forget it all, since he just got rid of the latest in a line of loser boyfriends, Skylar just wants to do his job at the local bakery.

When he meets his new neighbor, Marc Douglas, Skylar finds himself drawn to the quiet young man, even as he tries to not let his libido take over. But, when another mysterious rose turns up on Valentine’s Day with an invitation to meet his admirer that night, Skylar has to decide whether to take a chance that love is right there waiting for him.

Dividers

Review: Skylar is unlucky at love. His last boyfriend cheated with everyone he could find before Skylar tossed him out. After being alone for a while, Skylar starts to find roses on his doorstep—one at a time—slightly creepy, slightly interesting. The random gifts arrive for a while.

One day, after returning home from a long shift making baked goods at work, Skylar meets Marc. The chance meeting as Marc moves into the apartment above Skylar sets off a series of events that draws the men together. Randomly, Skylar notices his gifts stop arriving, leaving him unsure whether to be relieved his stalker has moved on, or disappointed that he is no longer someone’s object of affection.

But Marc gets closer to Skylar, and the two begin a dance that may or may not be a budding romance. Skylar wants to take the chance on romance, but his track record is not very good. Marc is sure he wants Skylar, but how to convince him the feelings are real?

As Valentine’s Day nears, Skylar is buried with work, hundreds of people want his baked goods to complete their holiday plans, but in the middle of all the work Skylar finds another rose and an invitation to find out who has been shadowing his life—and why. Does Skylar take a chance, or does he go for Marc?

This is a sweet short story, one that does a lot in its few pages to take hold of the reader. Those familiar with romance will not be disappointed. The style is light, the read is fast, and the payoff comes quickly. Pick up the story if you like short reads with positive endings that tie up nicely in the end.
