Review: Rook Stevens is a mystery…and he just can’t seem to avoid dead bodies. He runs up against Mark Vicks, a cop who truly has it out for him, in this installment. But why? And then there’s the slinky, classy diva Sadonna Swann. Is she friend or foe to Rook?

Detective Dante Montoya has to be careful with Rook. His love and the need to protect Rook run deep, but he fears that Rook will run at any moment, because he does whatever it takes to protect his heart. Despite all the chaos that arises, though, Dante stands firm and always has Rook’s back.

Archibald Martin, Rook’s harsh and stubborn grandfather, makes a big mistake with his grandson, but they both need each other in their own ways. Manny, Dante’s uncle, really needs to give Archie some lessons on tact and poise. Manny has a heart of gold, and loves his nephew and Rook. I would have liked to see Archie and Manny in a heart-to-heart talk with each other.

Rhys Ford is just amazing with the written word and storytelling. There are quite a few parts in this novel where the writing in just poetic and is very emotional. The plot will definitely keep you on edge with all its crazy twists and turns. Tramps and Thieves is an excellent murder mystery that will keep you guessing with every turn of the page. You never know when the next shot will be fired or the next body—or body parts—will show up. This novel has an abundance of well-written characters, some you’ll love and, of course, some you’ll hate. Hank Camden, Dante’s partner, made me like him this time around. He’s funny, snarky and gruff, but his soft side really came through in this second installment of the Murder and Mayhem series. As for me, I’m ready for the next book. Just what will Rook do?

Now, I’ll totally admit to not being the best reviewer, but if you are a fan of this author, Tramps and Thieves is a must read. If you haven’t read this series yet, start with Murder and Mayhem. Rhys Ford totally entertains and never disappoints!
