Lyrics and Tattoos
Hi! I’m Avon Gale, and my new book, The Love Song of Sawyer Bell, is all about a kickass lady Americana singer who falls for her classically-trained fiddle player while on tour for the summer. Music is a really personal thing for me. I’m definitely one of those who are drawn to the lyrics (which given I’m a writer makes sense), even if I have no idea how people write songs to save my life.
I’m also a fan of tattoos, so I thought I’d share the musical/lyric tattoos I have and where they’re from!
- “Not forever, just for now.” – This is from Uncle Tupelo’s “Whiskey Bottle,” which just so happens to be written about my town, Columbia!
- “Let it Ride, Let it Roll, Let it Go” – Ryan Adams’, “Let it Ride”. (I look at these two tattoos A LOT to remind myself that nothing lasts forever, and that sometimes you just have to let things go.)
- “Unknown and Beautiful” – From Lucero’s song “Smoke”. Lucero is the inspiration for the band Racer in both The Love Song of Sawyer Bell as well as The Ballad of Whiskey Jax, which is the second book in the Tour Dates series :D
- “I’m made up from the stars, I’m shining so bright” – John Butler Trio’s song “Zebra”.
- “Just follow some other storm” – Murder by Death, “Good Morning Magpie” (This is my favorite song :D)
- “To the heart” – Frank Turner, “The Road” (5 and 6 are both surrounding an image of a compass in a storm cloud)
- “Face the Next Storm” – Frank Turner, “The Next Storm” (accompanies a storm cloud – there’s a reason I went with “Gale” as a pen name, LOL)
- “There’s a blaze of light in every word.” – Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah (I got this a few days after Leonard Cohen passed away, and it’s accompanied by a lightning rod.)
- “Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes” – The Headstones, “Nothing Changes” (This is script on my lower back, and remains the most painful tattoo I’ve ever gotten, which, hey, I think is probably fitting.)

About the Book
Victoria “Vix” Vincent has only two weeks to find a replacement fiddle player for her band’s summer tour. When classically trained violinist Sawyer Bell shows up for an audition, Vix is thrilled. Sawyer is talented, gorgeous, funny, and excited about playing indie rock instead of Beethoven. Their friendship soon blossoms into romance, even though Vix tries to remember that Sawyer’s presence is only temporary.
Sawyer’s parents think she’s spending the summer months touring Europe with a chamber ensemble. But Sawyer is in dire need of a break from the competitiveness of Juilliard, and desperately wants to rediscover her love of music. Going on tour with her secret high school crush is just an added bonus. Especially when Vix kisses her one night after a show, and they discover that the stage isn’t the only place they have chemistry.
But the tour won’t last forever, and as the summer winds down, Sawyer has to make a tough decision about her future—and what it means to follow her heart.

About the Author
Avon grew up in the southern United States, and now lives with her very patient husband in a liberal Midwestern college town. When she’s not writing, she’s either doing some kind of craft project that makes a huge mess, reading, watching horror movies, listening to music or yelling at her favorite hockey team to get it together, already. Avon is always up for a road trip, adores Kentucky bourbon, thinks nothing is as stress relieving as a good rock concert, and will never say no to candy.
At one point, Avon was the mayor of both Jazzercise and Lollicup on Foursquare. This tells you basically all you need to know about her as a person.
