Review: When I requested this book, I did not realize it was part of a series. The good news is you do not need to read the other books to understand this one. Not only are they written by different authors and about different characters, the connecting theme—the crash of Flight HA1710—is explained in this book, so I didn’t feel disconnected.
I truly enjoyed this book because it made me think about decisions I’ve made in my life and where I might be had I not made them. Some of the decisions are good, and others I think were not so great. But did those same not so great decisions lead me to this point? Would I be in a totally different place had I made better choice? Would that place be better than what I have now, or worse? I’ll never know.
This book allows readers to see the events that led up to two characters making life-changing decisions. Harrison Kelley is banned from Flight HA1710 after getting in a fight at the airport. The reason for the fight? Everyone thinks he slept with the groom, Antony, the night before the wedding. And it sure seems that way from how Harrison reacted at the wedding, but was that the truth? When most seem to have abandoned him and hate him for what he’s done to the bride and groom, Elijah stands by him. Elijah has had a crush on Harrison since high school, and even though Elijah isn’t so sure the man Harrison grew up to be is quite as he remembered, Elijah makes the decision to stay off the flight and be the friend that Harrison needs.
Events unfold and the two share a room. Revelations are made about the past and present, and then the news of the plane crash breaks, the plane both of them should have been on. They start to question what they really want in life and whether or not they can truly have it.
Both characters were well developed for such a short book. Harrison has a lot of baggage from his past, and he knows he needs to make a change, but it’s difficult. Elijah has been wearing rose-colored glasses where Harrison is concerned, and when faced with the reality, he wonders if the man is what he really wants anymore, even as Harrison begins to see what he could have had if he had not been so blinded by his lust for Antony.
This story is not insta-love, and I was so glad for that. Emotions run high, and yes, there is a lot of drama. But the story, while sometimes steamy, is realistic. Harrison wants to sleep with Elijah, but Elijah refuses to be a fling for Harrison and stays true to himself. If Harrison does want him, he’ll have to work for it and show he’s moved past Antony.
The ending was hopeful. I was happy for that. There is a hope that things will work out for them, and things seem to be leading that way, but the two will take their time and enjoy discovering each other rather than rush into the physical.
I highly recommend this book. It was short and while filled with drama, just what I needed out of a book at the moment. I think now I’ll check out the other books in the series!
