Review: Okay, so full disclosure. When I requested this book to read, I did so because I saw it was from Angel Martinez, and she never disappoints. So, when I saw The Brimstone Journal: Collection One, I thought, <i>Oh, cool! All the Brimstone books in one volume, like an anthology, so I can get caught up on the series.</i> Well, joke was on me because that was most definitely not the case. This is actually book five in the Brimstone series, and, having no context, I found myself thrown in for quite a wild ride.

But, you know what? I liked it. I can’t comment on every short story because there are a ton of them, but I will say that I enjoyed each one. Even though they are short—a few hundred words at most—I still got a clear view of the characters, and it made me want to read the rest of the series even more.

I also liked that Martinez includes a frame of reference for each short. She has placed when they happen within the timeframe of the series, which will make it enjoyable for already established fans of the series because they will be able to see little snippets.

Also, it was so refreshing to see such an interesting mashup of genres. I mean really, science fiction and demons? A demon prince in charge of a cargo ship in space? With angels involved? Who thinks of something like this? Angel Martinez, that’s who, and what a fun ride!

I look forward to getting to know Shax and crew even more when I go back to read the entire series. And then I’ll reread The Brimstone Journal again to further appreciate the flash fiction.
