We faced a dilemma when I woke up hungover in the middle of the ocean. He needed to get the hell out of town to do some soul searching and decide whether or not to divorce his wife, and I needed to get back on land because humans didn’t belong on the water. There was also better cell service on land, and I had my four-year-old daughter on vacation in Paris to check in with.

Then I remembered I wasn’t a complete tool. Ellis wasn’t doing all right, and we were practically family. I had to stay and make lemonade with him. Of course, me being me, seemingly un-dateable and complicated, I had to develop feelings for him, too.

Review: A lot of people are going to say that there is cheating in this book. I disagree. There was a separation, a divorce in the making, and the mutual decision to “see what else is out there”. There is no sneaking around, at least not behind the soon-to-be ex-wife’s back. Because of all those reasons, I don’t see what happened in this story as cheating. It was just two people starting a relationship while one of them was in the middle of getting a divorce.

Uncomplicated Choices is light-hearted and funny at times, but also packs some emotional conversations. There is a lot of honesty and communication between the main couple, as well as between them and the ex-wife. The way these three handled the situation they found themselves in was very mature. I was happy to read about it and imagine what their future would look like. They found a way for their little family to work in the best possible way, and it was a way that made me excited to learn more about how their lives turned out in the years to come.

I liked the way Casey, Lincoln and Ade raised their two girls together. They had managed to co-parent them and have a happy, unconventional family that worked. I liked the dynamic of that family. Even though most of the members weren’t related by blood but by choice, their bond was real and their connection one that withstood time and struggles. Both Ellis and Casey had struggled in their upbringing, so they didn’t have a lot of fond memories from their biological family. Because of that, their chosen family was a that-much-more important part of their lives, and one they cherished.
