Blurb: Undercover cop Deacon Shepherd lost everything trying to maintain his cover – the man he loved and the future he craved. He walked away and never looked back because it was the only way to keep Rafe alive.
The last thing he needs is to be dragged back in that world, but an attempt on Rafe’s life is enough to make him risk his heart again.
Rafael ‘Rafe’ Martinez wakes up in hospital, the victim of a hit and run. He’s stunned when the first face he sees is that of the man who betrayed him and left him for dead three years before. Witness protection had stripped Rafe of his name and now it seems someone from his past wants him dead. The only way he can stay alive is to trust the man who tried to kill him and then broke his heart. But how can he ever trust Deacon, and how can Deacon protect Rafe without falling in love all over again?
Review: Rafael Ramirez is young, smart, stubborn, and has put his life on the line too many times, trying to dig into his Uncle Arlo Martinez’s business. But now, Rafe is seeking revenge for his parents’ deaths, and has worked his way into his Uncle Arlo’s family in an effort to destroy it. His psycho cousin Felix has no problem pulling the trigger, though—especially when it comes to Rafe.
Deacon Shepherd has been working undercover, and has now become babysitter to Rafe, which interferes with Deacon’s job to take down the Martinez clan. Deacon also is attracted to Rafe, but he knows that road only leads to a distraction that he doesn’t need. When Rafe puts himself in danger—again—he is caught between Felix and Deacon. And now Rafe has to face the fact that there is no way to escape, and that this is the end for him…at Deacon’s hands. But in a strange turn of events, Rafe finds a new life for himself, becomes a new person—until, that is, he becomes a victim once again, and comes face-to-face with his murderer. Deacon.
R.J. Scott offers up and then delivers a lot of emotion in Deacon’s Law. Deacon and Rafe have to deal with the horrors that they each go through, in different ways, and they both have their own moments of sadness, hope, loneliness and, eventually, healing. Towards the end there’s a very touching scene where Rafe is dealing with survivor’s guilt, and sort of feeling sorry for himself, until Sam Larson tells him his story. There’s plenty of suspense and danger that comes in the form of the Martinez family, starting with Arlo and Felix, who really portray a from-hell sort of evil in the form of hate, bigotry and gore.
I highly recommend reading the Heroes series, especially A Reason to Stay and Last Marine Standing, which introduce Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Jackson, Samuel Larson and Deacon Shepherd, and also gives some glimpses into R.J. Scott’s Sanctuary series. I hope there will be another installment in this series.
