Blurb: Jeff Irwin and Brett Willson raised a fine son, Adam, in their unconventional, judgment-free family. But being the son of two dads has its challenges. Although Adam loves them, he’s determined to prove he’s not gay, like they are. To this end he’s become the star pitcher of his high school baseball team, a true jock.
Then Adam is suspended after he gets into a fight at school, and his dads find out his grades are slipping. Determined to put him back on track, they hire him a tutor: a short, nerdy kid named Trevor. Despite his resistance, soon enough Adam’s worst nightmare comes true when he finds himself attracted to Trevor. This gives him a choice: follow his heart or become just another dumb jock.

Review: I love a good Opposites Attract story, as well as discovering new (to me) authors and narrators. So, as it goes, Another Dumb Jock was, indeed, the trifecta for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook from start to finish. Jeff Erno wrote a fantastic book, and Ezekiel Robison brought everyone to life in a wonderfully lively way.
Adam is a great kid who was brought up in a loving but non-traditional home setting, with two dads and an older sister. It’s all rather normal to him, but some people still find this home life a bit of a hard pill to swallow, and definitely let Adam know it. Especially one particular boy who has taken it upon himself to be the spokesperson of sorts for the narrow minded, by bullying Adam and taunting him verbally. Finally, Adam had enough and fights back in the form of a fist to said bully’s nose, which results in both students being suspended for a week. The problem here is that Adam has been working his tail off to be the starting pitcher on his high school baseball team, and will finally achieve this goal in a few short days, but being suspended from school will force him to miss this opportunity.
Good thing his dads intervene and broker a deal with the principal and baseball coach that allows for Adam to pitch at his first season’s game. As with all deals, there comes a hefty price that Adam is not sure he really wants to pay. He has to clean the locker room after practice every day until the end of the year, pay back his bully’s medical expenses, go to anger counseling once a week, and work with a tutor until his grades (which were recently slipping significantly due to the bullying) go back up.
Enter Trevor, Adam’s tutor and contemporary at school. Trevor is a self-professed geek and a bit of a control freak when it comes to tutoring. To scandalize Adam even more, Trevor admits openly that he is gay. This rocks Adam’s world, particularly because he is fiercely trying to define his sexuality, but is still extremely confused. Which causes even more problems and confusion when Adam finds himself highly attracted to Trevor.
Another Dumb Jock is an extremely sweet story of discovery, personal growth, acceptance, and, above all, love. To be honest, this book knocked my socks off. Color me surprised when I went searching for other books written by Jeff Erno and found out that Another Dumb Jock was book two in a series! Apparently, book one, Dumb Jock, is about how Adam’s dads met in high school. It is also narrated by the fabulous Ezekiel Robison. So, I am here to tell you that Another Dumb Jock can be read (or listened to) as a standalone. Which means, don’t worry if you have not read the first book in this series, because even if you may be missing a bit of the dads’ backstory in book two, it is written and narrated so well that you won’t even realize it. And, at the risk of turning this review into a novella, I must encourage you to take a chance on Another Dumb Jock, written by Jeff Erno and narrated by Ezekiel Robison. It is absolutely brilliant!
