At a Glance: Thom Collins’ stories never disappoint me. The Coach is a short story with a solid plot. Both Cole’s and Josh’s characters were well developed.

Blurb: A routine assignment unlocks the secrets of his past.

News man Josh Holleran knows very little about sport and prefers to cover the crime desk. When his editor sends him to interview representatives from the local rugby team, Josh has little enthusiasm.

The Woodbridge Warriors are celebrating, having qualified for a national competition and it’s a significant story for the rural area, but Josh knows nothing about the game. His interest increases massively when he meets Cole Jansen, the hunky team coach. Cole is a big, beefy guy in his mid-thirties, exactly Josh’s type.

There’s something very familiar about him. Josh can’t shake the feeling that they’ve met before. Soon he realizes exactly who the coach is and how he knows him. A shameful secret from Josh’s past is about to be revealed and he’ll have to overcome his regret to stand a chance of happiness in the future.

Publisher’s Note: This book was previously released as part of the Right Here, Right Now anthology with Pride Publishing.

Review: Josh Holleran is a news reporter working for the Woodbridge Echo. He gets stuck writing an article about the local rugby team, the Woodbridge Warriors, but knows nothing about the sport and can’t talk his way out of the assignment. To add to the problem, he has to wait to get an interview with the coach and team members.

Cole Jansen is a pretty good guy. He likes his solitary life and doesn’t want to be in the spot light, so he’s more than happy to give his star player all the publicity. When Josh finally arranges an interview, he returns to the clubhouse—and gets a really good view of the coach, Cole. There’s something familiar about Cole, and when Josh realizes what it is, he hopes Cole doesn’t remember him. It was a tough time for Josh, growing up. There were times when trouble followed him, and seeing Cole again brings up some not-so-good memories for Josh.

Thom Collins’ stories never disappoint me. The Coach is a short story with a solid plot. Both Cole’s and Josh’s characters were well developed, and it was interesting to see how Josh’s past brought old feelings and worries back into the picture. Cole is the strong, silent type, and is a great match for Josh. I enjoyed it!
