The Q&A
Q: The prized possession you value above all others…
A: My husband
Q: The unqualified regret you wish you could amend…
A: Living in New York when I had just graduated from college. I chose Chicago which was a great experience but wish I had lived in New York first.
Q: The temptation you wish you could resist…
A: deep dish pizza
Q: The book that holds everlasting resonance….
A: The Bible?
Q: The priority activity if you were invisible for a day…
A: be on a movie set and watch what happens. I’d also like to be in the oval office.
Q: The film you can watch time and time again…
A: Star Wars IV, The Empire Strikes Back, Waiting for Guffman, Mommie Dearest
Q: The person who influenced you the most…
A: My father.
Q: The unlikely interest that engages your curiosity…
A: Interviews with older movie stars
Q: The poem that touches your soul…
A: Stopping by Woods on A Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Q: The event that altered the course of your life…
A: Meeting my now husband in the year 2000.
Q: The song that means the most to you…
A: Express Yourself by Madonna
Q: The happiest moment you will cherish forever…
A: Getting married
Q: The unfulfilled ambition that continues to haunt you…
A: to be an actor on television
Q: Your early recollections of writing fiction…
A: When I was in college one summer I wrote this novel on a cheap typewriter when I was visiting a friend in Chicago. She didn’t have a lot of time to spend with me so I wrote on the novel. The novel was 112 typed pages about a young man in angst. It’s terrible and I cringe to try to read it now.
Q: The way you would spend your fantasy twenty-four hours, with no travel restrictions…
A: I’d like to see Coney Island and take in several Broadway shows
Q: The pet hate that makes your hackles rise…
A: when I hear about kids being cruel to dogs and cats
Q: The figure from history you would most like to buy a pie and a pint…
A: Harvey Milk
Q: The piece of wisdom you would pass onto a child…
A: Go for your dreams while you’re young and if it doesn’t work out do something else but don’t wait until you’re older to pursue your dreams. It’s still possible but more difficult. And treat people with respect.
Q: The crime you would commit knowing you could get away with it…
A: my mind goes to the movie, How To Beat The High Cost of Living with Jane Curtain where these women staged this heist to steal money from this mall money ball. I think they got away with it. I would do that.
Q: The philosophy that underpins your life…
A: Break the rules when the rules don’t make sense. And as Quentin Crisp says, “Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level.”
Q: The character you enjoyed writing the most…
A: Madonna is a character in my graphic novel, Journey to Gaytopia. It’s fun to make fun of her but at the same time characterize what I can only imagine is the real her underneath what she presents to the world.
Q: The character you found difficult to write…
A: the character Donovan (who in real life is my husband). In Gaytopia, Donovan is just meeting my character (I play myself). I wanted to capture what we felt when we first met each other 17 years ago.
Q: The book you enjoyed planning/writing the most…
A: The latest book, Journey To Gaytopia
