Review: Sheep’s Clothing was originally published in 2011, but did not show up on my radar until it was re-released this month by Manifold Press. When I saw it pop up, I just couldn’t resist it. I haven’t met many little British comedies that I haven’t at least fallen a tiny bit in love with, and this one sounded fabulously absurd. There was no way there would not be some laughs involved in a short story about a reluctant werewolf plumber! There was the worry, of course, that at just thirty-eight pages the story would never get off the ground, but it was surprisingly well fleshed-out, and a ton of fun.

The blurb is short for a reason. Again, at only thirty-eight pages you don’t want to give too much of the story away. But, the premise really is pretty hysterical. Darren, an English plumber and electrician, has recently relocated to Wales after losing his gran, deciding a change of locale would be nice since there was no longer anything really keeping him in England. The kicker is that Darren is a werewolf and the Welsh countryside, including the neighboring farms, is full of sheep. It certainly seems like a recipe for disaster—but Darren isn’t like other werewolves.

It also turns out that the locals aren’t just your average folks either. On Darren’s first full moon in his new home, he has a run-in with Gethin, local hunky merchant, and…wait for it…weresheep. Gethin fills Darren in on how things work around there, and suggests that perhaps Darren should try shutting himself away for the night during full moons, which is the only time he has trouble controlling the wolf. The two strike up an easy friendship, and more. I loved their banter and their chemistry but, of course, nothing can ever go completely smoothly, and shenanigans ensue.

I found myself immediately taken in by the cheeky humor of the story and the characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed author Elin Gregory’s easy comedic style and dialogue. The end maybe got a little extra silly, which probably shouldn’t have come as a shock, given the subject matter, but all in all, I loved the originality of this fun little read. Definitely check this one out if you’re in the mood for something different that will make you chuckle!
