What if your family drove you nuts, but they were all you had?
It’s hard to stand out when you’re one of a big family. It’s even harder still when you’re the youngest of seven, and everybody in your family is sure you’re still a little kid. So it’s no wonder Tristan ran off to New York the minute he graduated from high school. He went to become a baker, and thanks to family connections he managed to apprentice with some giants in the business. But the guy he thought was the love of his life turned out to be a jackass, and the bakery of his dreams never materialized, and Tristan isn’t running away. Not exactly. Instead he’s going home.
Tristan is starting over. He’s in his mid-twenties, and still trying to prove that he’s an adult to his family, determined to show that he can take care of himself. Running home to Lake Balmoral is the last thing he wants to do. After what looked like a great life on paper, this homecoming feels like admiting to failure. And even though he tries to keep things quiet, it’s not long before his bothersome oldest brother, Simon, darkens the doorstep of his new bakery, and he finds himself feeling like a stroppy teenager again. Tristan’s family might drive him nuts, but at least there’s a cute boy across the street. Someone who didn’t grow up in town, who doesn’t know all the embarassing childhood stories, and someone who, like Tristan, seems to be starting over. That’s Jake.
Lake Balmoral isn’t home for Jake, which is fine because home doesn’t want him any more. Not after a long stint in jail. When nobody in his hometown of Coalville would give him a second chance, Jake came to Lake Balmoral to work in his sister’s garage. He’s got a past, and a secret, but he keeps both things to himself. Lake Balmoral hasn’t exactly welcomed him with open arms, but Jake’s sister is determined to help him get on his feet again, and Jake’s determined to pay her back for it. Besides, he doesn’t care what people in Lake Balmoral think of him. At least, not until he finds himself falling for the soft-spoken baker across the street who seems sweet and kind and cute and… scared?
And that’s the thing about Jake: He has a really bad habit of riding to the rescue. It’s what landed him in jail last time.
Jake and Tristan have a lot in common, but even though Jake feels pretty worldly, he has no idea what it’ll be like dating a baker — with six protective older brothers.
I’ve worked with chefs and bakers and professional tasters and other food professionals for years. Bakers are amazing. Making something wonderful out of almost nothing is what they do every day. It’s like a magic trick, and exactly the sort of magic both Tristan and Jake need.
