Blurb: Matthew Elliot is one of LA’s best detectives. He’s been labeled the golden boy of the Fab Four: a team of four detectives who’ve closed down drug-rings all over the city. He’s smart, tough and exceptionally good at his job. He’s also a closeted gay man.
Enter Kira Takeo Franco, the new boxing coach at the gym. Matthew can’t deny his immediate attraction to the man his fellow cops know as Frankie. But in allowing himself to fall in love with a man known to his colleagues, Matthew risks outing them both.
Matt and Kira work to keep their relationship and private lives hidden from Matt’s very public life, fearing it would be detrimental to their careers. But it’s not the other cops who Matthew should be worried about finding out his deepest, darkest secret…. It’s the bad guys.
Third edition – has new cover and has been re-edited, though no new content has been added.
Review: Matt Elliott is one of the premier detectives of the LAPD. He, his partner, and two other detectives have been dubbed the Fab Four for their uncanny ability to bring down drug dealers and crime rings with seemingly little effort.
Kira Franco is the new lead trainer in self-defense for the department. The two men have a few problems: one, neither of them is brave enough to be out, and two, they find each other irresistible. After an initial meeting where both try to hide their obvious interest, Matt and Kira, known as Frankie to one and all on the force, find themselves drawn to one another and neither fights the attraction very hard. As the relationship grows completely out of sight of Matt’s partner and long-time friends, Kira brings Matt into his world. Matt meets Kira’s mantic Japanese mother and his put-upon, deaf Latino father. Kira’s parents don’t just accept Matt, they encourage the love match between the two. Everything seems to be going well until a past case comes back to haunt the Fab Four and each man has his significant other kidnapped by a deranged drug dealer.
Long-time listeners of M/M fiction know the name Sean Crisden and his many amazing voice performances over the last few years. Once again, he does not disappoint. While the necessity of closeted men in the modern world in a major American city is questionable, Crisden takes this story and makes it come alive. The action portions of this novel are fully experienced by the listener, as Crisden’s voice is simply meant for these scenes. You can feel the tension in the situations clearly, making it more of a thriller in his capable hands than a mere police procedural.
The coupling of Matt and Kira is handled tenderly and with all the vigor that two strong, capable men can muster with one another. The romance portion here is just as well handled and jut as thrilling as the action sequences, and one is never at a loss for who is speaking. Crisden’s talents are among the best M/M fiction has to offer.
This book may have some story issues, but the voice talent makes it more than worth the price. As the title promises, this is book one in a series and we certainly hope that Sean Crisden returns to expand this world into a full universe. Buy this book, because the voice talent is excellent; buy it because the action makes this an above average story; and ignore the small failings of the set up. This book is worth the price.
