Blurb: Sometimes the best day of your life is the one you never saw coming.

Joe Cohen has devoted the past two years of his life to one thing: the care and feeding of Kade Bosa. His partner in their PI business, roommate, and best friend, Kade is everything to Joe, even if their relationship falls short of what Joe desires most. But he won’t push. Kade has suffered a rough road, and Joe’s pretty sure he’s the only thing holding Kade together.

Estranged from his own family, Joe knows the value of desperately holding on to someone dear, but he never expected his present and past to collide just as Kade’s is doing the same. Now they’ve stumbled across evidence that could change their lives: the impact of Kade’s tragic past, their job partnership, and any future Joe might allow himself to wish for….

Review: Joe Cohen has it bad for his roommate and best friend, Kade Bosa. Even though Kade is admittedly bisexual, there has always been a firm line when it comes to the two men taking any relationship further than just the friend zone. But these two have been through so much together and are about to find out that the supposed murder Kade did two years previous while undercover and strung out on drugs may not have been exactly what it seemed. In other words, Kade may have been framed and that will change an awful lot for both men. These two will have to face some tense and stressful times ahead and, while doing so, Joe will fight against crossing that proverbial line in the sand and admitting his feelings to Kade. It’s a huge risk he simply cannot take, for even though he is crushing hard on his buddy, the friendship they have is more important than anything else.

In her novella, Kairos, Mary Calmes offers up what she does best—create two wonderful characters who are head-over-heels in love and don’t yet realize it. Yes, when buying into her latest friends-to-lovers trope you are going to have to put aside some of your desire for realistic plot-lines, but the romances this author creates are well worth it if that is what you are seeking. Joe and Kade are clearly besotted with each other and don’t realize it…yet. Therefore, for a good portion of this novel you want to slap both of them upside the head and tell them to open their eyes for pity sake. The addition of a third character, Declan, who they pick up after a setup where Kade discovers that the cop who he thought had his back for many years is nothing but a snake in the grass, was just brilliant. I’d love to see Ms. Calmes make this into a series just so we could see Declan fall in love. He was the much needed humorous and lighthearted foil to the angsty Kade and Joe and was really adorable.

I admit that there are times when Mary Calmes seems to write the same kind of characters into a story that can feature an over-the-top plot-line that is hardly believable. But, these books are like crack to the many who enjoy nothing more than a solid romance with men who deserve a happy ending. If you are looking for some greatly detailed plot, then don’t come knocking on this particular novella’s door. However, if you are wanting a genuine love story with characters who appeal enormously and who deserve the love they eventually discover in each other, then I feel you can do no better than this book. Kairos is a love story, pure and simple. It is an unapologetic romance that will make your heart happy and perfectly feed any need you may have for a story that has no more aspirations than to give the reader a happy-ever-after.
