Blurb: Spencer Cohen is the guy who gets answers to relationship questions. Playing the role of the new lover, his job is to make his client’s ex realise one of two things: he doesn’t want to break up or he really does. Either way, his client gets answers.

The ex would either apologize and beg, or turn and walk. But in the end, Spencer’s client won. If he wanted his ex back and got him, it was great. If the guy walked away, then as hard it was for the client, he knew it was over. Regardless of the outcome, Spencer’s work was done.

Andrew Landon’s ex left him without so much as an explanation. But his sister can’t stand to see him miserable, so, much to Andrew’s dismay, they hire Spencer to be Andrew’s new boyfriend to get the ex back.

For Spencer, it is never personal. Merely a business transaction. No emotions, no strings, no complications.

Yeah right.

Even a blind man could see how this would end.

Review: Spencer Cohen is the story of a professional boyfriend-for-hire who helps people that are trying to get an ex back. Andrew, Spencer’s latest client, is a guy who is extremely reluctant to avail himself of Spencer’s services, but his sister and his BFF, Lola, have rather pushed him into it.

Spencer and Andrew spend time together under the pretense of getting ready for the confrontation with Andrew’s ex—the ex that Spencer can’t believe Andrew was ever with, because it seems like Eli doesn’t really know Andrew at all. Spencer spends the majority of his time really digging into Andrew’s personality and his likes/dislikes. He’s super impressed with Andrew’s talents—his piano playing, his art, etc.—and he’s not convinced that he really wants to help Andrew and Eli get back together since he’s definitely not sure that Eli deserves Andrew, not by a long shot.

This case goes nothing like that of his other clients. Spencer finds himself repeatedly drawn to Andrew; he buys him gifts, brings dinner, watches movies at Andrew’s house, hangs out with him, stalks Andrew and Eli on FB—things he’s never ever done—and before Spencer knows it, he’s in waaaaaay over his head. He knows for sure that he doesn’t want Andrew to get his ex back. And when it looks like it might happen, it pulls the rug out from under Spencer’s world.

This is the first of three books in the Spencer Cohen series, and it kicks things off with a bang. We meet Spencer and Andrew and sense the spark between the immediately; as much as Spencer tries to view this as a job, every day he spends with Andrew pulls him more towards a relationship. Spencer starts off as a bit of an enigma—we don’t really know the pain that drives him until nearly the end of part one. N.R. Walker is a masterful storyteller—an auto-buy author for me for years now—and this series is no exception. Spencer is a damaged character, but he may have found the person who can help him heal. Andrew is a sweetheart, and he’s finally beginning to see that maybe he doesn’t have to settle for a relationship that is nothing more than comfortable.

In the more than capable hands of Joel Leslie, the audiobook of this story is yet another gem. All of his voice characterizations are distinct and memorable. He’s kind of the Meryl Streep of M/M Romance accents. :)
