Blurb: It was spring in Portland, and I was studying for yet another test when Morgan showed up.
He was exotic, gorgeous, and sexy as hell, but he wouldn’t tell me where he was from.
Four seasons went by, and I still knew almost nothing about him. But I was about to find out.
Review: Zach has a special place to go on the OSU campus when he needs to study. On one particular spring day, an exotic stranger by the name of Morgan appears. There’s an odd spark between them when they meet, and their conversation leads to a kiss.
Summer comes, and by then Zach and Morgan have spent every waking minute together. Literature, poetry, foreign films and long walks have consumed their time together, but Zach took particular notice of how much Morgan loved the walks in the park, and that love of nature was infectious. But Zach could never get Morgan to reveal much about where he lived.
Fall comes, and their relationship becomes rocky. Morgan begins to spend less time with Zach, and upon Morgan’s reveal, the relationship ends.
During the wet and cold Portland winter, Zach works hard on his studies with the hope to graduate and leave the bad memories behind. But to his surprise a disheveled Morgan returns, and Zach can’t deny his love for Morgan. They do what they can to mend their relationship, knowing that Morgan would return home in the spring.
Spring comes, Morgan is gone, and Zach is in misery. With a yellow yarn bracelet, Zach finds himself at their special place, contemplating a decision that could change his life forever.
Morgan is a fascinating, well written short story from J. Scott Coatsworth. It’s descriptive and detailed as the beauty of each season changes, and the brevity of the story does not take away from the characters’ depth; from the beginning, when Zach and Morgan meet, the attraction is warm and almost innocent. The feelings from Zach at the point of their breakup are so heartfelt, and I had to know what would happen to Zach and Morgan. To be honest, this genre isn’t what I usually read, but I have to say this was a page-turner for me.
