Review: Paper Swans by E.M. Lindsey

Title: Paper Swans

Author: E.M. Lindsey

Publisher: Amazon/Kindle Unlimited

Length: 131 Pages

Category: Contemporary Romance

Rating: 4 Stars

At a Glance: This is a short novel, but E.M. Lindsey began it from a place that made it impossible not to feel Shiloh and Dom’s connection. This isn’t insta-love; it’s delayed gratification of a love everyone but the two involved could see.

Blurb: They’ve spent years sharing everything with each other.

Love.
Loss.
First kisses.
And quiet promises.

But the one thing Domenico will never be is Shiloh’s. It’s a cruel fate, but it’s one Shiloh can live with so long as Dom is happy. So long as they never stop being friends. But when Shiloh asks Dom to go as his date to a costume party, he realizes his best friend is going to discover a few things about him he’s never told anyone. A few things he’s afraid to say aloud to himself.

While Shiloh doesn’t think Dom will abandon him, it might just change the dynamic of who they are, and that’s not something he’s sure he’s willing to live with.

Review: Paper Swans is a soft book. It’s quiet and understated and sweet, and it flows with an undercurrent of yearning that explores the meaning of love between two best friends. Shiloh and Dom have been all but inseparable for years, but there are secrets between them—not the least of which is that they’re both deeply in love with each other—that are navigated before their happy ending.

The extent to which these two men will go to take care of each other, to provide for each other emotionally, but remain oblivious to the fact their feelings are not even remotely one-sided, let alone platonic, gives the story an angsty vibe. It’s the part of himself Shiloh has kept hidden for years that becomes the turning point in their relationship, though, and he has no idea if revealing it to Dom will be for the better or the worse.

This is a short novel, but E.M. Lindsey began it from a place that made it impossible not to feel Shiloh and Dom’s connection. This isn’t insta-love; it’s delayed gratification of a love everyone but the two involved could see.
