At a Glance: The way Jordan L. Hawk has guided this series through heart-pounding fright and intrigue, then woven that with equally heart-palpitating romance, and then was so damn bold as to make John hurt in ways I couldn’t have imagined . . . well, it’s no wonder these are some of my all-time favorite of his characters.

Blurb: John Starkweather has one chance to stop a series of murders by the rogue telepath Ryan. Though only the drakul Gray and Night are safe from Ryan’s mental manipulation, John knows it’s up to him to capture his former friend—and fellow victim—before anyone else dies.

But outwitting a telepath isn’t an easy task. In order to bring Ryan in, John will have to confront the darkest parts of their shared past. Because before all is said and done, John and Ryan find themselves confronting an even greater evil: one that will swallow them up body and soul.

Review: It’s coming up on twelve years since Jordan L. Hawk introduced his readers to SPECTR agent John Starkweather and the not one but two beings who would become the most important human and drakul in John’s life, Caleb and Gray. Or, as I’ve always called them, . The way Hawk has guided this series through heart-pounding fright and intrigue, then woven that with equally heart-palpitating romance, and then was so damn bold as to make John hurt in ways I couldn’t have imagined . . . well, it’s no wonder these are some of my all-time favorite of his characters.

Here is what John’s unwavering loyalty to SPECTR and one thin dime got: it got him one thin dime. That and a lot of betrayal. The agency didn’t even have the courtesy to stab him in the back. His loyalty to them came around and stabbed him right in the front, where it would hurt the most. Now he’s torn between doing what’s right, following his heart and conscience, and doing what SPECTR needs him to do. Yeah, needs, because everything is a mess of epic proportions, and John, along with Caleb, Gray, and Night, are the only ones powerful enough to clean it up.

John can even do it with a broken heart.

His confrontation with Ryan—the person closest to a brother John ever had, and the person who betrayed him in a deeply hurtful way—left a lump in my throat the approximate size of a small boulder. The feelings John and Ryan have for each other are composed of a bond forged in a hell they should never have experienced. But the closure comes at a cost. When Caleb and Gray are threatened, John uses every means at his disposal, even though it goes against his SPECTR training, to save them and bring them home.

I have loved this series from the moment Hunter of Demons debuted. There has been danger and elation and awesome battles and a superb romance that has built over the course of the years. Now it’s coming to its peak of romantic payoff, and I’m elated to have witnessed it.
