Blurb: “What do you mean I’ll be someone else’s PA?” I slump, the bell on my Santa hat tinkling. “For how long?”

“Just until Christmas,” Rex promises. “Don’t worry, Jack. You’ll like him.”

Review: Surprise! I love this book. I love it for all the reasons I always love a Con Riley romance: the kindness and compassion; the hurt and the comfort that come along with processing emotions and preserving one’s peace; the bonds that manifest and grow from an interest in protecting someone else’s well-being. There is feeling in the reading, and the emotional weight of Jack’s story coalesces so well with the season.

Jack is resigning his position as Rex Heligan’s personal assistant (he’s Rex’s keeper and handler, if we’re being honest) to move on to what he believes will be bigger, better, shinier things. The question is whether he’s doing it for the right reasons. Let’s put a pin in that, though, because Reese Trelawny is about to complicate things as Jack’s new temporary boss.

Reese is a living, breathing hero. Safe Harbour is not only the name of the organization he works for; giving the people he rescues safe harbour is his life’s work. Guiding kids through, and beyond, their trauma is his mission. Keeping Jack is his end goal—not that he’d confess this to Jack. Reese knows Jack’s history with a sex pest boss, and the very idea that he would make Jack feel uncomfortable or pressured or hemmed in, in any way, is utterly inconceivable.

Which means there is a dance happening, in both the literal and figurative sense, between them. Watching Jack and Reese circle each other and then finally come together is the ultimate reward. They began dancing to a different tune; then, harmony arrives in perfect pitch through mutual kindness and understanding.

Until Christmas and, of course, beyond.

The cameo appearances in these books are always such a treat. Getting a glimpse of my new favorite librarian, Isaac, made me all the more anxious for his book, Second Story. Heart-felt and heartful, this is the perfect book at the perfect time for the perfect feelings it stirs.
