Review: Catch a Ghost by SE Jakes

Phil Butler runs a mercenary for hire company named Extreme Escapes, LTD. His company assists with rescues when the government needs a helping hand. One of his new rules that he won’t budge on is that all of his operatives need a partner. So what does he do when he has a former CIA spook/former Navy Seal who hates partners and a former FBI man/ deputy sheriff that is scared to have a partner? Ofcourse you put them together right? Well you can imagine the chaos that ensues.

Prophet has done his time as a Navy Seal and then as a CIA spook. Due to some injuries suffered in doing his duty and some health problems he has settled into EE, LTD. He goes through partners like some people go through socks. He prefers to go it alone, but Phil isn’t having it anymore. Told he has no choice Prophet meets his new partner Tom Boudreaux. To his dismay he is attracted to this Tom guy, so he has to push him away as quickly as possible.

Tom Boudreaux was a great FBI agent and then deputy sheriff, except for the fact his partners kept dying. You see Tom has this quirky sixth sense thing going on, but none of his partners believe him. When they don’t listen to him they end up dead, doesn’t make for much on the popularity scale. About a month before he starts work for EE, LTD, he receives an anonymous video of a soldier being interrogated that sets him on his heels. He has never seen someone so feral or so strong. Imagine his surprise when his new partner is the soldier from the video. The worst part, he is attracted to this wild card, he has to get away as quickly as possible.

The two men are on a case that is all about Prophet’s past and he isn’t exactly being forthcoming with facts. Eventually Tom and Prophet end up as lovers and they start sharing some of their pasts with each other. The case is bringing up many of Prophet’s ghosts and he is finding it hard to battle them and the connection he feels with Tom. The easiest relationship he has right now is with his neighbor Cillian, who is also some unknown type of spook, and he only has contact with him through the computer. When the case comes to a head Prophet ends up taking a bullet for Tom which brings their partnership to an end. Prophet succeeds in pushing Tom away for a short time, but when the past comes back with a vengeance, Tom is dragged back into Prophet’s life.

The man responsible for Prophet’s worst nightmares is back and he has Tom. What will Prophet do to save Tom? How in the world is Cillian involved in all this? Tom is tired of being pushed aside so he isn’t sticking around to find out. He does just what Prophet wants and chooses a different partner, and effectively burns the bridge built between him and Prophet.

SE Jakes won my unwavering fandom when she wrote the Men Of Honor series, but I think I may have a new favorite series. If you like flawed men who need each other to heal and can also blow stuff up, then by all means you need to give this a chance. I am marking the calendar for book 2, I just hope time flies!
