Well. For this I have called Jordan L. Hawk a cliffhanging angst giver, and I’ll not thank her for it.
Okay, I’ll thank her a little bit for it, because demons and drakul and dark times ahead, gang, the dookie has hit the fan and jinkies, it’s so very, very good!
John Starkweather and Caleb Jansen, and by association, Gray, have come to a crossroads in this, Eater of Lives, the fourth installment in the SPECTR series. Not only are they dealing with a demon that enjoys noshing on nummy human flesh, but they’re also coming to terms with what it means that Caleb’s forty days of possession are almost up. What exactly does it mean for Caleb and Gray, if Gray remains stuck in Caleb’s body? It’s anyone’s guess right now because, let’s face it, there is no precedence for an NHE embodied within a living human host. Caleb and Gray are an anomaly in a world filled with them, and as Gray becomes more cognizant of everything it means to be human, the harder it becomes to think of him as anything other than a man, a man who could be destroyed if he is exorcized. He and Caleb are treading upon uncharted territory simply by existing, and the powers-that-be aren’t taking any chances with them. Add to the mix the unwelcome return of the past to the present, and you’ve got yourself the recipe for a heart pounding, heart wrenching, heebie-jeebie filled feast of reading joy.
Eater of Lives is spooktacular, hands down, my favorite book in this series so far. Did I mention it ends in a cliffhanger? Yes. Yes, it does, so if you have a hard time dealing with months of wondering what’s next, be forewarned, this one’s a doozie.
As always, Jordan L. Hawk’s prose is a razor sharp slice of perfection, and her imagination is on full-steam-ahead in this episode of the SPECTR series. If you’ve been following along on the journeys of Agent Starkweather and his two loves, this is an absolute must read!

I love this series! The writing and imagery is to die for.
If you haven’t read this one yet, Melanie, do it soon! I’ve loved all of them, but this one just grabbed me and pulled me in. Things are definitely coming to a turning point!
