The idea behind this story is a good one. Basically, the player believes he got played. Someone who used the “L word” to get men to bend to his will has finally, truly fallen in love. When he tells Devon, the man he has fallen in love with, how he feels Devon sets a land speed record for dressing and leaving. Gil is devastated with this turn of events. He ends up trying to go about his day but fails miserably, so he heads home only to find a note and a strange black box on his porch, along with Devon.
Devon asks for a chance to explain his actions, and Gil desperately wants to find out if there is a chance to salvage his relationship with the only man he has ever loved. Gil and Devon both have some confessions to make and, hopefully, when they get them out they can get back to their happily ever after.
I really liked the idea of this story but the delivery of it left me wanting. The two MCs didn’t even really have a conversation until 60% into the story. The entire story was told through Gil’s internal voice. It was difficult to get a read on either character because of this. I couldn’t find a link between the characters and myself. I found myself wishing these two would just get to the point. All the hemming and hawing left me exasperated with both of them. Maybe this book will appeal to someone that likes being told a story, but me personally, I like to experience the story along with the characters, and I just didn’t get that here.
The writing felt a little rushed to me also, like the author was trying to tell me too much in the least amount of words. This book wasn’t really a book for me, but I am not going to say it is a bad book. I am sure there are people who will love it. The author has some great snark in here, and I did find myself laughing at some of the internal dialogue, but it just wasn’t enough to make me love it.
