J.P. Barnaby's "Charlie, Rentboy" Is A Keeper

Charlie is an engineering student in his last year of college. He has a partial scholarship, but how is he going to make ends meet for silly little things like rent and food? He could always work fast food for minimum wage, but when he finds out about a different kind of job that pays SO much better there isn’t really any other option for him. Charlie loves sex, he loves to top, he loves to bottom, and he loves to give and get oral, so why not get paid for it?

Much of Charlie’s business comes from repeat customers or referrals. The latter is how he comes to be spending the weekend with John. For twelve hundred dollars he would do just about anything, but this gig is going to be fun. He is basically going to play boyfriend for the weekend and get paid handsomely for it. What he didn’t expect was the uber-hottie that hired him. There was something different about this guy, but Charlie had to stay professional. A pretty face won’t pay his rent.

John is a very lonely, very rich man. While he is in Chicago he hires a Rentboy for the weekend so he can have some fun with someone who doesn’t know all about him. He wants to be wanted for him, not for his checkbook. When he meets Charlie, he ends up having so much fun and doing so many firsts he doesn’t know if he wants it to end when the weekend is over. Unfortunately, John has a well known face and, oh, did he forget to mention he is in the closet? When he and Charlie are caught in an intimate moment by a photographer, John is in danger of losing everything and Charlie’s true identity could be revealed. Will this pull the men apart or push them closer together? Well, you are gonna have to read it to find out!!!!

I have to say I absolutely adore this story. It is such a step away from what I have come to expect from a book by J.P. Barnaby. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of her previous books, but there is usually a very wounded boy or two in her stories, and plenty of angst and other dramas that pull your heart strings. This book is more of a romantic comedy with a teeny tiny bit of angst. It was so much fun to experience J.P.’s sense of humor in this book because we don’t get to see it often.
