There’s A Blend Of Vampire And Werewolf Lore In “Disturbed Connections”

I was really excited to read this book because it has my two favorite things in the world, vampires and werewolves. Separately they are hot, but together they are combustible. And that’s what I was expecting: a steamy story about a vamp and werewolf getting together in a major way. Imagine my surprise when I read the book and there was little to no combustibility. Can you say frustrating? Extremely!

The premise was very interesting, but the storytelling and writing left a lot to be desired. I like the mythology of vampires and werewolves in this book. Both were not made or “born” but went through an “awakening” of some sorts. Society consisted of humans, vamps and werewolves all living together. Unfortunately this genesis is not explained at all! This would have been an interesting part of the story. I felt like I was in a vacuum while reading this book. I think I know what the author was trying to do. She was trying to tell the story as if the story took place in our reality, and we didn’t need an explanation. But I wanted one because I don’t think I have read anything with this idea before and in the right hands, this would have been a great story.

Chris, a werewolf, moves into a vampire coven house, hiding his true nature. He’s running away from his abusive clan. Alec is a psychic vampire that lives across the hall. Alec soon realizes what Chris is but for whatever reason, he helps Chris conceal his true nature from the rest of the vampires. They become friends and soon more. But vamps and lycans are forbidden to have any sort of sexual relations. This is where it got totally confusing and frustrating because aside from a touch on the hand here or there, there was no hot vampire and werewolf sex, and absolutely no biting! One of the things that makes or breaks a vampire story is great sex, and it was missing here. Nothing. This was a missed opportunity on the author’s part. Disappointing.

The quasi love triangle subplot involving a mutual friend wasn’t developed well and didn’t support the overall plot of the book in any way. I felt like screaming at times while reading this book for the lack of believability in the characters and their actions. The two main characters could have been more likeable if they’d been better fleshed out, both as individuals and as a couple. This was just not my cup of tea.
