Review: I am a huge fan of Jet Mykles so when I saw this book on MLR’s new releases I snatched it up. I am so glad that I did. I liked the premise of the story when I read the blurb, and I couldn’t wait to read it.
Dustin is one of most uptight thirty year olds I think I have ever read about. Dustin, or Dusty, has worked very hard to get to where he is in his life and he intends to continue on the same path. He is a successful architect and he owns his own home. His house may be a fixer-upper, but Dusty is very proud of his house and all the work he is doing himself to fix it up. When he sees Bryce, he is almost instantly put under his spell. Against his own better judgement, Dusty ends up having a one night stand with Bryce. He believes that will be the end of their acquaintance, but Bryce has something else in mind entirely.
When we first met him, Bryce was in the company of some pretty awesome ladies. We find out these ladies are M/M authors and employees from the publisher that Bryce works part time for. Bryce also works as a part time waiter and model. Bryce is just about as far opposite from Dusty as he can get. He doesn’t have any idea what he wants to do with his life professionally and he likes to play the field with any man that strikes his fancy. Once he sets his sights on a one night stand with Dusty he won’t be swayed. After their night together Bryce can’t seem to get Dusty off his mind and he realizes he doesn’t want to.
Not a man who is faint of heart, Bryce decides to drive to New Mexico from Austin to surprise Dusty and surprise him he does. The two men have a great weekend together, and Dusty realizes he doesn’t want their time together to end, but he realizes it has to. Dusty has set his mind on the idea that he is too old for Bryce, and he won’t listen to his sister or anyone else if they have anything to say to the contrary. For some reason Dusty is convinced that the eight year age difference is too much for them to overcome. Bryce is less convinced of this, he believes that they could make a relationship work, and he sets out to prove this to Dusty.
The next time Bryce comes to visit, he decides to lay all his cards on the table and take a risk. This doesn’t turn out how he wanted it to, and he realizes that he is going to have to work hard to get what he wants. Bryce will have to overcome Dusty’s own self-constructed walls, a blast from the past, and his own issues to get his happily ever after with Dusty.
Watching these two try their best to get over one another was nothing short of comedy. Where Bryce recognized his own shortcomings and tried to do something to change himself, Dusty went the other way and decided to replace the Bryce-sized hole in his life. Eventually the whole mess comes to a conclusion when they both realize they can’t fight their feelings after all.
This was a funny and heartwarming story, and I absolutely loved the female characters. Watching Bryce and Dusty do the push and pull toward each other, and then away from each other, might make you want to shake them a time or two, but I think you will love them as much as I do. I highly recommend this book.
