Review: This book is a Harmony Ink YA title, but it does deal with some heavy hitting topics. I came away with a feeling of a mash-up for lack of a better word. This book brought to mind a melding of Lord of the Flies meets King Arthur.
This book brings to light the number of kids that are having to survive on the streets due to circumstances out of their control. It shows, too, that the people with the most to give are sometimes the ones that give the least help. We also see that with the right type of role models and some positive reinforcement kids, no matter their station, can rise up and be wonderful.
Watching the kids come together under Arthur’s leadership and guidance was amazing. I loved watching them blossom with a little guidance and direction. They went about regaining their place in society through peaceful steps and they became a true team.
Though this is a fantasy story, it is steeped in realistic issues from our lives. We have, as a society, failed our children in some big ways. There are many wonderful souls out there doing everything they can to help, but there will never be enough. When kids are given up on in the judicial system, thrown on the streets because of who they love and basically are just being treated as disposable messes, it will take a miracle to save them.
This book will break your heart at times, but I believe that it will also spur you on to do more and to be more for the children of our times.
