Be Prepared To Take A Mysterious Trip Down “Blue River”

“Time is the longest distance between two places.” ― Tennessee Williams

Blurb: Photography genius Ethan Mars is out and living the fast life in Los Angeles until a mysterious mist in Topanga Canyon sends him back in time. There he meets Quinn Parker, a farmer who has hidden his homosexuality from everyone, even Margaret, his fiancée. Falling in love is the last thing Ethan expects, and the last thing Quinn can allow—in 1863, being gay can get him killed. When Ethan is unexpectedly offered a way home, he faces an impossible decision: go back… or stay?

Review: It’s 2013, Topango Canyon, and Ethan Mars and his friend, Randy, are out early one morning, busy toking it up. Their goal… to get stoned and look for a mysterious mist that a fellow friend of theirs has told them about. One that leads into the past.

~chuckling~ Okay, this is where I start to see the humor in this one.

As it turns out, they do find this mysterious mist, but only Ethan manages to be the one that lands himself in Blue River, 1863.

There, he meets up with Quinn Parker and his sister, Hes, who own a farm nearby. Seems these two are familiar with the mist, as they’ve had another future visitor earlier that year. So Quinn and his sister decide to take Ethan home with them.

At this point, call me strange, but I had a couple of laughing out loud moments. One of them was the dining experience. Remember, I mention earlier about the smoking. The other was the outhouse experience. That alone added a star to this rating. Good luck with that one, Ethan!

Now, for the romance part, and this is where I have a problem with most short stories: the relationship building is rushed through. Yes, one can feel the chemistry between Ethan and Quinn, but I really feel cheated when it seems that it’s only the sex that keeps them interested in each other. Maybe a follow-up would help?

Basically, Blue River is a light romance with some angst added to keep the reader interested, so I’m giving this one a rating of 4 stars!
