My Unconventional Sex Club
Thanks so much for letting me visit to talk about my unconventional sex club! The book, Curious Sustenance, won’t be released until the 20th, so I’ll do my best to be entertaining without including any spoilers.
The story of this club starts at Powell’s City of Books in Portland. I love going to Powell’s! It covers a whole city block—three stories of books, books, and more books! I can literally spend a whole day browsing the different rooms, stopping for coffee and something to nibble on in the café when I need a break.
The café is a funky little room crammed with plain wood tables and chairs, and framed by a counter hugging windows that wrap around the corner facing 10th and Burnside. I’ve spent many hours at that counter, reading, writing, or just watching the world go by outside the window. Across Burnside, on the lowest of three floors is a recycled clothing store. The building itself is typical of the kind you look right through in Portland—from across the street you can’t even see a sign over the door. For years I looked at the windows and daydreamed about who would live there. One day, while I sat there acting like a stereotypical Portlander (writing and drinking coffee from a cup roughly the size of my head) I started “seeing” wonderfully kinky things going on behind those windows. That quickly led to a long list of “what ifs”: what if that was a private club? What if it was invitation-only—how cozy would that be?
It didn’t take long for the sex club of my dreams to take shape. Since I’m all over the place, there’s a little of everything there! The foyer is reminiscent of the first porn flicks I watched (before I was legal, and that was MANY moons ago): scarlet drapes lining a coat check area, manned by a cutie wearing a matching bow tie and little else.
Ross, my hero in Curious Sustenance, compares the bar to someone’s living room during a theme party. That sums up the common area pretty well: comfortable and casual while not sacrificing the bordello-meets-metal-concert vibe I love so much.
The club doesn’t play a huge role in CS, but it may show up again in another story so I spent a lot of time day-dreaming—to create the perfect club. The kind I’d want to go to. So, nothing like Ron Jeremy’s never-ending party, where $100 and the right wardrobe will get you in any night of the week. The members of my club are attorneys, nurses, and small businessmen so they have to trust that their evening of fun won’t become their ticket to the unemployment line.
The top two floors of this building are really a hotel, which suggested even more possibilities than the studio and one-bedroom apartments I’d envisioned—the better to accommodate everyone and their particular preferences, both public and intimate. Hallways branch out in two directions, one goes to the owners’ private rooms and beyond (to a full-time living area). The other way leads to the theme rooms. One of these makes an appearance in Curious Sustenance.
The Green Room is equipped with a hard-rubber stage (the better to kneel for long periods of time), and a lot of comfortable seating—because once things get going in there you don’t want to leave. It’s an “almost anything goes” area, where anyone can ask you to do anything at any time. Or, you can just watch. Eventually, I may go back to this room for more fun and games. We’ll see. For now, I’ll leave you with Ross’s foray into The Green Room.
Yeah, you guessed it—The Green Room is behind one of those windows you can see from Powell’s Café.
Excerpt:
Ross emerged into another large room, this one decorated in emerald green with all the tassels and candles and richly gleaming metals he’d come to expect. A small group of people lounged on what looked like a sectional sofa covered in green velvet, watching something beyond Ross’s field of vision around a corner. He moved as quietly as he could to get a look at the scene. A slim young man stood in the center of a small stage that appeared to be surfaced in thick, hard rubber, his hands bound behind his back with a short bar between them, blindfolded. His bare chest shone in the single spotlight that was trained on him, and all he wore was a black thong. De-licious. His sweat-dampened hair curled against his neck, and in moments, Ross’s heart was racing, keeping pace with the man’s panting breaths.
He whimpered as a much larger man took his arm and helped him kneel next to what looked like a padded sawhorse. Despite the whimper and the kneeling man’s trembling arms, his face showed a depth of arousal and bliss that resonated with Ross. The other man was dressed all in black, and when he drew a gentle hand across the bound man’s shoulders, Ross wanted to lean into it right along with him.
The big man took a handful of damp curls and bent the other man’s head back, exposing the graceful arc of his throat. He bent and whispered something in the blindfolded man’s ear that caused him to smile and shiver at once. The man in black had barely straightened up, and the other man was stretched across the padded sawhorse. It was the perfect height for him to lean on. The large man in black took a knee behind him and attached a bar to his ankles with thick fur-padded cuffs he buckled in place.Ross wondered if that kind of helplessness felt as good as he imagined it would.
The man in black stood and a loud crack filled the room. It sounded like a whip, but then the man in black moved what looked like a bamboo cane across the other man’s exposed ass. He’d cracked the cane against the leather of his own pant leg, or maybe his boot, but Ross’s legs felt a little weak. The man on the stage moaned and pushed his beautiful ass out as though begging for the cane to do more than rub lightly over his skin.
Ross slowly backed toward the door as the man in black slipped the cane between the other man’s wrists and pulled his arms straight up and away from his body. The picture was intriguing, the lean lines of muscle beneath smooth skin, shiny with sweat—honestly, a beautiful sight. But even though Ross wondered what would happen next, he didn’t see any place to sit except the sectional and wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep standing if he stayed.
He never knew boundaries could be so sexy.
Ross Jenson is looking forward to a little midmorning delight to celebrate making Lifetime in Weight Watchers, but after he spent eight months losing ninety-eight pounds, what his lover gets him is a triple-layer chocolate cake. When Ross refuses to eat it, the newly minted ex leaves the country and dumps him via e-mail, with three sentences and a link to a chubby chasers web site. A few days later, Ross’s best friend and workout buddy takes him to her favorite club for drinks. Ross is shocked when he realizes it’s a sex club but warms to the idea in record time when a mysterious Japanese man and his silken ropes sweep him off his feet. Ross has never thought of himself as adventurous, but he can’t stop thinking about the man who makes his bones feel like gummy worms.
Warnings: this book features a corporate sensitivity trainer with an agenda, an awesome gal-pal, an unconventional sex club, a mysterious Japanese rope artist, and another taste of Portland, Oregon as seen through my twisted mind.
Thanks for reading everyone!

Bio:
Charley Descoteaux has always heard voices. She was relieved to learn they were fictional characters, and started writing when they insisted daydreaming just wasn’t good enough. In exchange, they let her sleep once in a while. Every guy deserves a beautiful love story even, or maybe especially, the ones who would usually be in the supporting cast. Home is Portland, Oregon, where the weather is like your favorite hard-case writing buddy who won’t let you get away with taking too many days off, and in some places you can be as weird as you are without fear. As an out and proud bisexual and life-long weird-o, she thinks that last part is pretty cool.
I’d like to invite you all to Kink Month at my blog (otherwise known as November), in which my friends and I discuss all the kinkiness on our minds!

I can honestly say I’ve never thought about your question before but the description of the club you’ve described sounds amazing and someplace it would be very interesting to visit. Thank you for the excerpt and the giveaway.
Thanks for stopping by, Allison. I hadn’t thought much about it either until that day! :)
Please count me in for the giveaway.
Thanks for visiting, Kim! :)
Thanks again for having me! I hope you all have a happy Friday & a wonderful weekend! :D
You’re welcome any time, Charley! And happy Friday to you too. :)
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go to Powell’s, so this was a fun post! I’d love to see a library-themed sex club (cute boys in glasses who know where all the porn is, and will demonstrate!), or a hockey-themed one (I love the gear and the fellas so much, though I guess the ice could pose problems)…
Oh, Trix, I love your library-theme! A hockey-theme could work too, though–too warm & they’d have to remove their uniforms. ;)
Thanks for stopping by & playing along!
Thank you, for the chance!!!
Hi Loren–thanks for commenting! :)
The sex club of my dreams would be dimly lit, very clean, with low, plush furniture everywhere. It would be attended by men in their late 40s to late 50s who are very hairy, muscular, with nicely trimmed beards. They would greet you with a kiss and direct to you private themed rooms, where you can watch or participate in your most carnal desires.
Jim Evans
Oh, and Charley, thank you for this line of thinking!
Always happy to be the bad influence, Jim! ;)
You’ll let me know if you win the lottery and open this club, yeah? Sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing!
Well, ladies and gentleman, it’s been fun, but this virtual sex club is now closed and the lucky reader selected. The winner of an E-copy of Curious Sustenance goes to…
Jim Evans! We’ll all be watching for your mature men’s club, Jim.
I’m emailing Charley with your contact information right now, so expect to hear something soon. :)
