Mary Calmes is one of those authors who writes a book and you just know you are going to love it. Whether it’s the cute little twink with his alpha male or an older cowboy trying to live up to what his man thinks he is, Ms Calmes never fails to entertain. This new universe she has created is no different. There is Roman Howell, the scarred man who has learned the hard way there are few people you can count on in life, even when it comes to family. Add in a little Quade Danas, a jackal shifter, who has learned that very same lesson, just in different ways, and you have the newest story from Ms. Mary.
Quade has been Roman’s bodyguard for years and in that time, he watched a young man lose his beautiful face, his parents, and his self worth. He has also seen Roman overcome all of those losses and start to rebuild himself and his life. Roman has had to deal with his “friends” and family trying to set him up with a man just so they could benefit from his bank accounts. This angers Quade because for the last few years he has wanted to be Roman’s man, but he knows he isn’t good enough for Roman, so he never makes a move to get what he wants.
Roman on the other hand feels exactly like Quade does; he loves Quade and he will not stop pursuing the man until they are together for the long haul. When an unexpected visitor drags Quade back into the life he was kicked out of years before, Quade has a huge decision to make. It seems his old pack has been thrown into turmoil, and some of the pack members believe that he is the only one who can repair the damage. Quade’s decision is made even harder when Roman confesses his love to Quade, along with the fact that he knows Quade is a shifter.
When Quade returns to his pack to help them he does so without Roman, and there are a couple of unexpected players thrown into the game. This makes his decision even tougher to make and only adds to his stress. Before the story is over, Quade will have to face his past head on and make some decisions about his future.
Mary Calmes has done it again with Old Loyalty, New Love. As usual, her characters have exceptional depth and make you feel as if you know them personally. She has a knack for writing characters you never want to see go away. I for one mourn when one of her books ends, and I have to wait to revisit the universe she has created.
In this story there are some characters that I loved and some that I hated. There were also some people that I felt downright sorry for. I am happy to say that the universe Ms. Calmes created in this book is one that I want to revisit as often as possible. If you loved Stef and Rand and Sam and Jory, then I don’t think you should, even for a moment, hesitate to check out Quade and Roman. The supporting characters were, at times, just as entertaining as the MCs. If you haven’t read this one yet it is a must add to the TBR pile.
