Review: Bite the Pillow: Six on Sex is a flash fiction sexual journey mapped out in six individual stories, stories that take the reader on a first person narrative that’s as provocative as it is voyeuristic, often intensely so, as sex and sexuality are explored intimately. Sex is used as a means to an end in some cases, as compensation, as consolation for the want of someone else; in others, it’s a means of discovery and the revelation that settling for Mr. Right Now and finding Mr. Right are sometimes dependent upon each other.
If you keep to a traditional definition of romance this isn’t a book you’re likely to use that word to describe, but there is a passion to each of these stories that draws the reader in to the thoughts and feelings of each narration. This is a book that uses sex as communication. It’s a form of language the author uses, along with his gift of powerful, expressive and poetic prose, to eloquently examine the connection and disconnection between the physical and emotional.
Phillip MacKenzie Jr. aims to titillate and engage the reader, and he succeeds spectacularly on all counts. If you love the instant gratification of short stories that are delivered in an erotically charged way, then Bite the Pillow fits that order to perfection.
