Review: If you’ve ever read a book and had a hard time deciding exactly why you liked it, then felt as though all you wanted to do was defend and justify your liking it, well, welcome to In the Blaze of His Hungers.
Let’s just call this book what it is: a guilty pleasure. It’s a book about lust, pure and simple, that narrates the story of the taboo relationship between eighteen-year-old Ryan Campbell and his best friend’s dad, Javier Ferrera. Javier is a man with a tainted past filled with drug abuse and the abandonment of his wife and young son, Pete, when he finally decided he couldn’t live the lie of a straight man any longer. Ryan hates Javier on principal for leaving Pete fatherless and a little bit broken, yet he can’t seem to keep his desires to himself, taking his car to Javier’s repair shop just to fantasize about doing all sorts of dirty-naughty-sex things with the man who’s nothing but walking, talking umph. You feel me, right?
This isn’t a perfect book, and there are some plot and character gaps I’d have loved to see filled in a little more fully, but the thing that kept me from putting this one down until there were no more pages to turn was to see how the author could possibly bring this seemingly impossible relationship to a believable resolution without Ryan losing everything and everyone he loves in the process. Does Dominique Frost succeed? Honestly, some of that will depend on how much you like your books wrapped up in the tidy box of happily-ever-after, and if you can accept it’s done maybe a little too easily considering Pete’s eventual resignation that his best friend is having sex with his estranged father. It also will depend on your ability to take it on faith it’s more than just great sex that’s the common denominator which factors into these two being together, because if ever there was an opposites attract story, this is it, and it takes a little suspension of disbelief on the reader’s part to see a future for this couple.
Bottom line, though, is that Javier’s predatory magnetism and Ryan’s sassy innocence made me want them to work, which is sometimes all I need to get wrapped up in a story. The line of who’s seducing whom blurs just enough in In the Blaze of His Hungers to keep it from becoming simple “Daddy” porn, and there’s just enough plot and conflict to keep it from being simply about the sex. But who am I kidding? It’s a lot about the sex here, people. But it’s also a story about redemption and second chances for a man who had everything to gain because he’d already lost everything, and the young man who gives everything of himself at the risk of losing it all.
If you’re looking for quick and sexy May/December erotica, that defines this book pretty perfectly.
