Review: WOW! Really, that is exactly where I am right now with this book. After reading A Better Man, I just knew that the second book would be good, but I had no idea that it would eclipse the first book so much. When I met Matt and Julian in the first book, I thought I knew what loving fictional characters was; then I met Cam and Hunter and that love just multiplied.
Cameron Pierce is that character you want to wrap in your arms and just shelter. Hunter Donovan, however, is the lucky man who gets that job. Hunter is an A.S.A. who takes his job very seriously, while Cameron is an ex-con who has been isolated from the real world his entire adult life.
This unlikely couple meets at the diner where Cameron works. Cam seems to have found his niche at the small diner. He teaches himself espresso art via YouTube videos, and he settles in with the owners, Bill and Lucy, quicker than he expected he would. When Hunter sees Cam for the first time at the diner, he is immediately attracted, and Cam feels the same way.
Over a few weeks’ time, they perform a classic courting dance and eventually, the two men develop a relationship. Cam knows that he is going to have to be honest with Hunter about his past, no matter how scary that is for him. When Cam’s past threatens to interfere, he’s amazed when it doesn’t have an adverse effect on his budding relationship with Hunter.
Once everything becomes clear, both men will lose things that they held dear, but they will gain more than they ever imagined. The one constant in this story is the love these two men share. They are not quick to share those words with one another, but they show one another the depth of their feelings every single day.
Jaime Reese did something I didn’t know was even possible with this book. She managed to make me love the MCs from the first book more than I did while reading about them then, and then gave me two more men who blew my mind. There was a lot going on in this story, but Ms. Reese was able to tie everything together well and keep the story flowing seamlessly all the way to the final word. I found that she kept the big spoilers hidden very well in the beginning of the story, and little by little let the truth come out.
I would love to gush about this book, but so much of this story needs to be experienced firsthand, and I don’t want to ruin this fabulous book for anyone. I would highly recommend this book, but the first book HAS to be read first to get the full enjoyment of it. I only hope that Ms. Reese has book three in the works because I cannot wait to read more about The Men of Halfway House.
