Review: I loved Lindsey’s character in The Pack or the Panther, the first book in this series. I was thrilled when I found out this was his story. For me, Tara Lain is a must read. Her characters are unforgettable, colorful and just fun to read.
I absolutely adored Lindsey. He’s flamboyant, funny, calls everyone “darling”, and is simply fabulous. Lindsey is also half human and half wolf. He’s struggled with his two sides his whole life, wanting at times to just let the wolf loose, but he doesn’t. He’s come to accept he may never find another wolf to mate with, gay werewolves are almost impossible to find. On the outside he seems to have it all, money, good looks, a carefree life with no worries, but deep down he’s wanting what everyone else has, someone to love. Enter Seth, a man who catches Lindsey’s eye, and the attention of his wolf. Seth is the total opposite of Lindsey; he’s a detective who rides a Harley, wears leather and denim, is a little rough around the edges, and he’s full blooded human.
Seth has never been fond of feminine guys, but for some reason, Lindsey just does it for him. Seth needs Lindsey’s help with the case he’s working on and as he spends more time with Lindsey, he’s finding himself more and more attracted to him. It was great to watch Seth come full circle with what he thought about effeminate men and what he thought his type was. He’s come to realize that you love who you love, no matter what. Neither one is what the other typically goes for, and it was nice to see stereotype prejudices knocked down for both characters. I love seeing two men who are total opposites get together, and Ms. Lain has the formula down pat, and makes it work. She writes in such a way that by the end of the book, you aren’t seeing how different the characters are from one another, you’re only seeing them as one. Their differences aren’t an issue anymore, and it makes you wonder what the conflict was even about.
Meanwhile, someone is kidnapping the wealthy and holding them for ransom. Seth is leading the investigation and Lindsey, well, let’s just say he has his own way of helping out. Of course this leads to a heated difference of opinion between the two, and a separation. This is when both men come to the realization that their feelings for each other are a little deeper than they want to admit. I actually saw the light bulbs go off above their heads as they finally get it.
I also loved the introduction of Jazz. He’s a kid from a group home that Seth and Lindsey befriend and come to care for. The author didn’t go into great detail about Jazz, but from what we see his character is full of life and energy. I hope we get more of him in the future. There’s definitely a story there.
Overall, as with all Tara Lain books, this was a fun read: wolves, romance, mystery and amazing characters, who could ask for anything more? I’m definitely looking forward to the next book.
