Blurb: Wealthy, attractive Lucas Reika treats life like a party, moving from bar to bar and man to man. Thumbing his nose at his restaurateur father’s demand that he earn his keep, Lucas instead seduces a valued employee in the kitchen of their flagship restaurant, earning himself an ultimatum: lose access to his father’s money or stay in the middle of nowhere with a man he has secretly lusted over from afar.
Quiet, hard-working Jared McFarland loves his farm on the outskirts of Hope, Arizona, but he aches to have someone to come home to at the end of the day. Jared agrees to take in his longtime crush as a favor. But when Lucas invades his heart in addition to his space, Jared has to decide how much of himself he’s willing to risk and figure out if he can offer Lucas enough to keep him after his father’s punishment is over.
Review: For some of us there are those “go-to” authors whom we rely on for a certain type of story. For me, author Cardeno C. has always been the writer I turn to for a warm, fuzzy romance that has the most delightfully likable characters and a wonderful happy ever after. Cardeno C.’s latest novella, McFarland’s Farm, does not disappoint!
Jared wants very little: moderate success for his farm, a quiet life and a loving man to share it all with, but between the fact that he bears a scar on his face, which leaves most men staring in disgust, and his own inner doubts, Jared has only pieces of the life he longs for. Once married, Jared now lives openly as a gay man in the tiny town called Hope. But, as is the case with most small towns, the possibility of finding someone to love is very slim, and Jared grapples with his loneliness as best as he can. Plus, it does not help that he’s had a crush on his ex-wife’s brother, Lucas, for quite some time. So when Jared is asked to give Lucas a place to stay while the man’s father decides how to forgive him for his latest fiasco, Jared reluctantly agrees. Little does Jared know that Lucas has also developed a crush…on a very quiet farmer.
Make no mistake, the sweet love story that unfolds between these two men is really well written. The snarky sarcasm and almost downright rude behavior that Lucas displays for Jared hides a tender heart that is so used to being battered and tossed aside. For Jared, his outward appearance drives his shyness, and the fact that he is a mountain of a man who enjoys his farm and avoids the city life does not make him the smoothest of operators. Two seemingly polar opposites who are undeniably attracted to each other but fumble about, denying their interest, makes for a fun and delightful story.
Perhaps my only complaint is that the declaration of love happened just a bit too rapidly, which pushed the boundaries of believability just a bit for me. Even with the long standing crush in place prior to the opening of the story, the way in which both men let down their guard seemed to move way too fast. However, this minor flaw does not keep McFarland’s Farm from being a beautiful story of love and acceptance.
