Guest Post and Giveaway: Tidal Change by Chris T. Kat

Sex Underwater

A big thank you to The Novel Approach for having me! I’m Chris T. Kat and Dreamspinner Press will publish my new release, Tidal Change, on September 17th. Tidal Change is a shape-shifter story but it also has fantasy/fairy tale elements because the main character, Marty, is a merman.

Given that Marty is a merman, but a shifter as well, he’s capable of having sex in his human form, even underwater. Of course, that’s not what you wanted to hear, right? ;-)

No worries, there is underwater sex, and it happens while the guys are in their shifted forms. Now, how does the sex work? For a while, I contemplated basing my mermen’s physiology on fish, but after some research decided against it. For the story to work, I needed my merfolk to be mammals. Since I’m a whale and dolphin lover for, hmm, shall we say forever, the logical conclusion was to have a look at how these animals have sex.

        §   When not aroused, the mermen’s genitals are hidden beneath a fold.
        §   If aroused, the penis will push out of a small slit and be easily accessible.
        §   They’re belly-to-belly during their mating.
        §   During the sex, they dance, just like dolphins do.
        §   My mermen are able to talk telepathically underwater, but during sex they’re solely concentrated on how they feel.

So that’s my take on mermen sex underwater, which is based on dolphin sex. Do you like this scenario? If not, what would you like to see differently?

Excerpt: Rick shot Marty a hard glare before he shifted from the toilet seat to the tub’s edge, where he reached out and trailed his fingertips along the outer line of Marty’s fluke. A deep rumbling hum resounded in the small bathroom, and when Rick glanced at Marty, he’d closed his eyes.

Emboldened by Marty’s reaction, Rick kept up the slow stroking while he observed the scales glimmering in various shades of green and blue, the beautiful play of colors almost lulling him into a trance. The humming sound intensified and Rick shoved the sleeves of his sweater up his arms so he could trace the outline of Marty’s tail. It was smooth and kind of rubbery underneath his fingers. As he glided upward, Marty lifted into Rick’s touch while the water curled around him.

Astonished, Rick trailed up Marty’s tail, mapping it. His exploration also allowed him to sneak a glance at Marty’s crotch—or what should have been his crotch. Rick stopped in his ministrations and stared at where Marty’s abdomen tapered off into his tail, human skin and fish skin combining an inch below Marty’s navel.

“What?” Marty asked in a hoarse voice.

Rick averted his gaze from Marty’s nether regions to look at Marty’s face. He waved with his hand to indicate to Marty’s crotch—or lack thereof—and said, “There is… there’s nothing.”

Marty frowned at him. When he didn’t seem to get Rick’s meaning, Rick sighed and stroked his hand along Marty’s abdomen to where his crotch should be. Marty’s belly muscles flexed and at the same moment he gasped, followed by the same rumbling hum from earlier.

A small slit appeared above Rick’s hand. He stared at it, his mouth hanging open. Cautiously, he circled his thumb around the slit several times, grinning when Marty undulated. A moment later, the head of Marty’s cock peeked out of the small opening.

Rick couldn’t help but laugh. “Hidden treasure?”

“Want to lure it out?”
