Blurb: As vain as he is beautiful, Nino Santos happily lives life waiting for the next ferry full of fairies to bring him new conquests. As long as they aren’t hirsute, he’s all in. So he’s shocked to wake up after a beach party he cannot remember with a hairy naked man lying next to him.
Teddy Miller doesn’t remember the “Bear Week” party either, much less the Abercrombie & Fitch model wannabe next to him. Teddy doesn’t give two cents about appearances, but guys like Abercrombie don’t return the favor. That’s why he prefers men with extra fur and padding over carbon copy clones of perfection—a type of man Teddy is far too familiar with.
When Nino and Teddy glimpse each other the next morning, it’s loathing at first sight. Instead of exchanging phone numbers, they exchange insults and vow never to see each other again. In Provincetown, however, escaping a trick best forgotten isn’t easy. Mutual friends and chance circumstances keep Nino and Teddy in each other’s orbit. But are they fighting each other or the attraction growing between them? The answer lies amid Provincetown’s windswept dunes and the night neither of them can recall.
Review: The 3rd audiobook in Jacob Z. Flores’ P-town series is called When Love Gets Hairy, and it’s a great Book, a great Listen, and I especially loved the characters! This novel has three main characters who all fall in love, one just sooner than the others. Nino Santos—Van’s best friend from When Love Takes Over—describes Teddy as a hairless pup, plastic and superficial, with no substance and, to top that off, as “a vacuous prick not worth the words I’m speaking.” Nino has six rules; he calls them the “Rules of Nino’s Life, designed to make my life happy and drama free.” I have listed the rules, though I’m not sure I have them in the correct order :
#1 Rule: Never Fall in Love
#2 Rule: Never Bottom
#3 Rule: Never let a guy sleep over
#4 Rule: Never Exchange Numbers
#5 Rule: Never do repeat fucks
#6 Rule: Don’t give a fuck

I liked Teddy’s description of Nino: “A small furry man that snores like a motherfucking freight train.” Does Teddy have any rules ? You bet. Rule number one is to rarely stray from the norm, because routine gives him security. But there are more: Never mention He-Who-Must Not-Be-Named, and never fall for a bad boy.

The last main character is Louie, Teddy’s French Bulldog. Where Frenchies are typically gregarious and friendly, Louie was reticent and antisocial. Louie treated everyone with disdain and seemed to get extra satisfaction from antagonizing Irene, Teddy’s hag nag . Louie was the matchmaker, bringing Teddy and NIno together as well as any one Frenchie could do.
Of course, in any of Jacob Flores stories there are many characters and When Love Gets Hairy is no exception. All the characters are colorful and really help to add depth to give you a taste of what it might be like to live in and visit Provincetown. I just can’t say enough good stuff about Jacob’s writing. I can always depend on him to pen a great story, but I like how he fills in extra details of Provincetown and the characters that visit and live there.
The narrator of this series, T.J. Jamesin, again does a great job and is perfect for the role. Jacob, please continue writing, and please continue using T.J. Jamesin as your narrator. It’s a great partnership.
