Writing a superhero origin/love story is about forty odd years in the making – I have loved the superhero mythology in many forms since I was a toddler, entranced by dudes in masks with really, really complicated lives. How do I resist heroic angst and bad decision making, all wrapped into one glorious mess?
Answer: I don’t.
One of the main dumpster fires in the life of the heroic is their love lives. I mean – you don’t mention you’re fighting crime by night and your lover thinks you’re double timing them. Mention in and suddenly they’re getting kidnapped by every villain in the universe.
It’s rough, okay?
Here are my top three favorite supercouples, all of whom have spent literally decades finding ways NOT to be together:
3. Batman and Catwoman
Two secret identities, two public personas, bat versus cat and that little problem of Catwoman not always knowing what side of the law she’s on and Batman, well. You know. He really needs a Bat Therapist.
But oh, all that delicious banter and form-fitting leather. The knowing stares on a rooftop as she clutches a string of pearls and he fondles his utility belt…
It’s never going to work but it’s always going to be sexy.
2. Professor X and Magneto
Come on – even Entertainment Weekly recognized what we’ve known all along.
These crazy kids are basically the Mutant version of “The Way We Were.” Their politics don’t mesh, their grand ideas contradict each other, the literally see the world through completely different eyes.
Clearly they are made for each other.
Ships that pass in the night, they’ll never stop giving each other meaningful looks from either side of the wreckage…
1. Rogue and Gambit
How do you resist a romance rooted in the fact that they cannot ever touch?
As a dear friend would say – feel that fact.
Oh the yearning. Oh the anger and resentment. Oh the long leather dusters and so many pairs of gloves.
Both of them have dead lovers in their pasts, both of them fear intimacy (because it can mean death – let’s all take a moment to enjoy that metaphor!), and yet they can’t stay away. Every little moment they’ve had over the years – the stolen touch, a fleeting kiss in a temporary reality, the absolute longing – is ratcheted up to a ten, sexier than even the most prolonged love scene.
I see your longing sigh and add one of my own…
So who are YOUR most beloved super couples?

In a dystopian near future, New York City has become the epicenter of decadence—gambling, the flesh trade, a playground for the wealthy. And underneath? Crime, fueled by “Dead Bolt,” a destructive designer drug. This New City is where Nox Boyet leads a double life. At night, he is the Vigilante, struggling to keep the streets safe for citizens abandoned by the corrupt government and police. During the day, he works in construction and does his best to raise his adopted teenaged son, Sam.
A mysterious letter addressed to Sam brings Nox in direct contact with “model” Cade Creel, a high-end prostitute working at the Iron Butterfly Casino. Suspicion gives way to an intense attraction as dark figures from Nox’s past and the mysterious peddlers of Dead Bolt begin to descend—and put all their lives in danger. When things spin out of control, Cade is the only person Nox can trust to help him save Sam.

Author Bio and Social Links: Tere Michaels unofficially began her writing career at the age of four when she learned that people got paid to write stories. It seemed the most perfect and logical job in the world and after that, her path was never in question. (The romance writer part was written in the stars—she was born on Valentine’s Day.)
It took thirty-six years of “research” and “life experience” and well… life… before her first book was published but there are no regrets (she doesn’t believe in them). Along the way, she had some interesting jobs in television, animation, arts education, PR and a national magazine—but she never stopped believing she would eventually earn her living writing stories about love.
She is a member of RWA, Rainbow Romance Writers, and Liberty States Fiction Writers. Her home base is a small town in New Jersey, very near NYC, a city she dearly loves. She shares her life with her husband, her teenaged son—who will just not stop growing—and three exceedingly spoiled cats. Her spare time is spent watching way too much sports programming, going to the movies and for long walks/runs in the park, reading her book club’s current selection, and volunteering.
Nothing makes her happier than knowing she made a reader laugh or smile or cry. It’s the purpose of sharing her work with people. She loves hearing from fans and fellow writers, and is always available for speaking engagements, visits and workshops. Find her at her website and on Twitter (@TereMichaels), and Facebook.

I’d love to read it! :) Thanks for the giveaway!!
So many superhero “couples” have lives that ensure they’ll never have that HEA…without help from a creative mind, that is. Thanks for sharing with us. I look forward to reading Who Knows the Storm.
I like the couples you listed in the post – but can’t really think of another one. Who Knows the Storm sounds interesting. Thanks for the post and contest.

Great post. Thanks for an entry. flutterfli01 (at) yahoo (dot) com
you’ve already quoted one of my OTP (Prof X and Magneto) but I’m also partial to Tony Stark/Loki (movieverse and agent of asgard inspired) or Tony Stark/Steve Rogers (which is a bit more visible in comicverse).
Kapony2@aol.com is my preferred email.
Please count me in!!! mevalem258 AT gmail DOT com

Super couple….hmmm. Christopher Reeves Superman and Lois Lane are a super couple I loved growing up. Geeky Clark Kent turns into smexy superhero but you have an equally strong female in Lois Lane. Loved the sparks and tension. Adding book to tbr list. Thanks for a chance at the giveaway

Congratulations on the new release. This is going into my TBR list . Your books are new to me, but I looking forward to reading this one. nc.skyie at gmail (dot) com
Thor and Loki epitomize the bad siblings dynamic with the golden child who can do no wrong and the other destined to look bad in comparison even if he wasn’t evil.

Thank you for an interesting post, hmm I am afraid I get of a fix for possible super hero romances from fanfiction, such as Lex Luther & Clark Kent, Draco Malfoy & Harry Potter, Steve Rogers & Tony Stark, Oliver Queen (Arrow) & Slade Wilson to name just a few. Thank you for a great giveaway slholland30 {at} outlook {dot} com
I am looking forward to reading about a superhero. I don’t really like comics, so it will be nice to read a story with a superhero. heather.rawlins@yahoo.ca
It’s Batman and Catwoman for me as well … I just love it when they get together, they are kind of explosive :D
alinutza4u2004[at]yahoo[dot]co[dot]uk
I’ve really only been exposed to a few superheroes. I used to watch that old Batman series as a child. I always thought Batgirl and Robin would make a great couple. :-)
oops! e-mail is aelnova@aol.com
I tend to slash hockey players instead, but that is naughty, I know. Even though it’s het, I really liked the scenario presented between crime fighter Shibari Girl and diamond thief Crabman in Tamsin Flowers’ erotic short “Boom! It’s Shibari Girl!” (There’s some intriguing moral ambiguity at the end, too…)

100% behind all three of your choices. I’ve always been a Harley Quinn fan myself and LOVE the idea of her and Poison Ivy! More recently, I like the idea behind Black Widow and Hawkeye (shared pain and understanding go a long way!).
